Would it be better to live in Hoboken or Manhattan if working in Jersey City? I like the idea of cheaper rent in Hoboken and a shorter commute, but it sounds like more stuff is going on in Manhattan, and the PATH kind of shuts down around midnight which leads to expensive rides back most nights (hence offsetting the cheaper COL).
Does anyone on here have experience with this or can provide advice? Thanks

I live in Hoboken and have lived in Manhattan. I prefer Hoboken, although I'm probably a bit older than you are. As you note, rent is lower, but you also get more for that lower rent. For $3k per month I get a very large 1 bedroom with a fireplace, w/d, 10+ foot ceilings, and central air. You also don't have to pay NYC city tax in Hoboken, which is nontrivial at high incomes. You're absolutely right that you'll have expensive car rides back on the weekend, but I think it's at the very least cost neutral when factoring in lower rent and lower taxes. You may not like the inconvenience, though. Do note that you might be taking expensive car rides back even if you live in Manhattan; it's a big place.
I think the bottom line is what do you really value? Hoboken, while great, does not have everything Manhattan does. If you've never lived in NYC, rents there are very low relative to the past few years, so now may be the time if you need to scratch the itch.

Your money will go a lot farther in NJ. Obviously it’s nice to be “in the action” in Manhattan but you have to know if it’s worth it for you. Basically it’s a simple question - do you value your at home experience or social experience more.
There’s obviously far, far more going on in Manhattan, and it’s not even close. The big question for you is how worth it is being in the heart of the action vs being a train ride (or uber) away. You’ll pay a lot for the privilege of living in Manhattan - taxes, rent, general cost of living are all higher, not to mention that if you’re going into the office you’re also extending your daily commute.
Are you going to make the trip over for quick drinks after a long day? Do you plan on going out every weekend? Are you single? How often do you think you’d actually participate in the impromptu shit going on?
There’s a lot that’s amazing about living in NYC, and Manhattan specifically, but whether it’s worth the trade offs depend on what you value and whether you actually enjoy those parts of the city, because plenty of people can’t stand it as well.
Personally, I’d live in Manhattan even if my job was in JC, but I’m not sure I’m in the majority there
