where to live, in a WFH world

Where should we live if WFH becomes permanent?  What if you still had to go into an office 1 or 2 days / week, therefore still needed to live near a major city, but not necessarily in the heart of a high COL city?  I'm a West Coast guy so this list is reflective of my own limited experience, so happy to hear what others are thinking.

  • Napa Valley - great wine, clean air & water, cozy mainstreet-type towns, easy drive 1-2 days/week to SF or Silicon Valley. Manageable COL
  • Santa Cruz - surf, boardwalks, nice cute town, driving distance to SF or Silicon Valley. Manageable COL
  • Pasadena - good schools, good weather, could make the drive to downtown LA or pretty much anywhere in LA, so long as you didn't have to do it too often. High COL
  • Santa Monica - because Third Street, the Palisades and the beaches are great. High COL

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.
