Which firms still sponsor for IB (U.S./NY)

Some firms have been cutting back on sponsoring international students/applicants for IB roles in the U.S.
Wondering which firms still do sponsor for full time positions coming out of undergrad.
(Heard UBS is not going to from 2021 on)

Yep exactly. They say they will "consider international students" and you might get a few interviews but in recent years, they almost NEVER give internationals offers at the end. It makes sense though because sponsorship costs banks time/money/additional uncertainty.

JPM does the same thing.

Really don't understand the purpose of this exercise on WSO. The list of banks that sponsors international students changes and shrinks every year. It also varies depending which school you attend (target vs. non-target) and what country you are from.

Sounds harsh but you really have to do the search yourself. Imagine missing out on an opportunity because you heard on this forum that the bank doesn't sponsor.

country doesn't really matter given that the h1b pool is just... well... one large fucking random pool. But target vs non-target status definitely does matter like you said and tbh I still think that plenty of banks are willing to sponsor if you have the chops and grind hard. I'm a senior so I got something locked in FT (Rx gig in NYC) but I know juniors who were intl and received US summer analyst offers from BAML, MS, Moelis, PWP and Evercore. If you're good and go to a target, it is still always possible to find a solid gig. Fuck Trump tho hopefully the events over the next few months help soften sponsorship policies.

i recently went through the IB recruiting process as an international at a target school. From my experiences networking and speaking with other international students from both my college and other schools like Wharton/NYU stern where there's much better information flow, this is my list:

Places that definitely sponsor and don't discriminate against internationals: GS IBD, BAML IBD, Evercore, PJT, Moelis, Lazard, Greenhill, CS IBD

Places where international status makes it harder to get offers or doesn't sponsor outright (see below for exceptions): Citi, JPM, MS NY (note, Menlo Park Tech runs a separate process and has sponsored in the past), UBS, DB, Barclays, PWP, Jefferies

Note, at some banks like Citi, JPM and MS NY, the HR person will never tell you explicitly they don't sponsor (because it makes the firm look bad) but I have heard from multiple sources that international status is taken into account and you will be discriminated against. But remember, every year there are always exceptions because many Asian/European international students are very wealthy and connected and will still land jobs at these firms due to these connections (i.e. parents/family friends that are connected to the banks).

Lol... firstly i cannot guarantee, as everyone else on this forum, that my list is 100% accurate but I think it's reasonably accurate. I literally just finished the recruiting process, and have international friends from H/S/W/NYU who have landed jobs all over the street and this is my conclusion from our joint experiences.

Saying it's "straight up not accurate" is not helpful.

Anyone have any datapoints of which firms sponsor (or specifically don't sponsor) at the MBA level? Heading to a target this fall (Wharton/Booth/CBS) and seeing how to prioritize recruiting.

Have heard second-hand that Greenhill, Gugg and some of the Canadian banks (RBC, TD, etc.) don't sponsor and that Citi "says" they do, but are generally not receptive towards int'ls. Any info/experience would be a great help.

I go to one of those schools. Nominally, these banks were open to all international students:

BB: GS, MS, JPM, BAML, Citi, Barclays, CS, DB

EB: EVR, LAZ, MC, PJT, PWP, HL (Rx group only)

Of these, GS, MS, JPM, BAML, Barclays, CS, DB, EVR, LAZ, MC, PWP, HL made at least one offer to an international student.

Note that BB class sizes (typically 10-15 from my school) are significantly higher than boutiques (typically 3-5 from my school), so as an international, you maximize your odds focusing on BB.

Not a lot of MM shops recruit here (only Piper, Lincoln, Baird), none of them were open to internationals students.

MS NY IBD says they do but they really don't, they used to be more open a couple of years ago

This is accurate, alongside with Citi. However, Citi is more upfront now with students compared with MS- (note that women applicants are treated differently). More specifically, for MS and Citi, it is case-by-case basis. They are willing to sponsor but it is very rare - the people you network with really need to back you up and given the amount of talent out there it is unlikely someone with put their reputation to bat for you unnecessarily. Thus you rarely see internationals at those banks

Just to add: banks categorize internationals too. LATAM, women, and are welcome as it adds to their diversity headcount ; other internationals are not. This is why you tend to see more female asian bankers around in BB. A perfect example is EVR: a good proportion of their internationals are women.

exactly. same for other BBs and EBs...International Asian Male vs Female ~ 1:9 based on LinkedIn and my school research report

Any info about JPM or MS sponsoring for Canadian? I know they did a couple years ago but I have heard conflicting information about 2021?

MS, EVE, Moelis, CS, Citi are definitely sponsoring this year - have heard of international students getting offers, from a target

My international friends have got offers from these two. Other I'm not sure but they if you are good enough, they mostly do.

Some of these banks differ by location, group, and characteristics of the candidate - would be wary of making a blanket statement like this.

MS/UBS/Citi effectively don't sponsor anymore with a few exceptions. GS, JPM, Bofa do. Not sure about Barclays or CS.

Not OP but citi absolutely does not treat international students the same as domestic, that is all I will say. MS is similar.

Where can I find information about banks that sponsor for non-IBD? Is it harder for international students to get into non-IBD divisions (ER, PWM, MO / BO) ?

I am also interested! A friend of mine is international and isn't going for IBD. She's not sure what companies or divisions to apply for. Please, does anyone know?

Personal Experience: Ones that definetely do and will do: GS, CS, MS, JPM, BAML, Pretty Much all of the EBs, Jefferies, Cantor, DB, Ones that don't: UBS, Barclays, HSBC, Soc Gen, Most of the PE Funds, etc Ones that only sponsor the best: Citi, PWP, Raine, William Blair, Baird, Stifel, Houlihan, LionTree

I know recruitment has really picked up in the East Coast for a lot of the banks, and as of now I am trying to strategize my timeline and which banks to network with to be efficient. Does anyone happen to know if the MM firms and smaller boutiques like Stifel, Harris Williams, Raymond James and etc happen to sponsor at all for IB positions or whether they have in the past? I would appreciate any inputs.
