Which of the following majors should I pursue to be competitive for finance or consulting?

I am current a rising freshman at MIT, and I’m not sure if I want to pursue finance (IB or quant) or management consulting. There are three options ahead of me:

  1. Mathematics with Computer Science

  2. Computer Science, Economics, and Data Science

  3. Computer Science and Engineering

The benefit of the first option is it’s versatility and rigor, although it lacks a “softer” major like economics or business.

The second option seems to be the best fit for my interests, but since it’s a single major I’m concerned that it would make employers think that I don’t have a deep focus in a specific field?

The third option is great because, for one more year, I can pursue a Masters in Computer Science degree, which I think would greatly increase my expertise in CS and showcase to employers my skillset. Nevertheless, I might be putting myself in a major that is perhaps less applicable than the other two options.

NOTE: I am planning on obtaining a MBA degree after a few years of working.

 

Sounds like you can't go wrong with any of them. I'd say just choose which you find most interesting. If you do well in the classes, build your resume, and network correctly, then you should be well-positioned with any of them.
