Who says chimps can't do math?
I'm a Mathematics/Computer Science undergrad from Houston, with an interest in quantitative trading. While quantitative trading interests me, I'm not sure yet if that is something that I want to seriously pursue. At any rate, I'll be interning at a bank this summer, as a Applications Developer (but unfortunately not quant focused).
Anyway, I've been lurking around WSO for a while now and have read many interesting discussions and figured I might as well contribute and say hi.
what's up? I'm a comp sci major also, gonna take some extra math classes to set me up for a quant trading role/MFE in the future if I go that route also. I'm interested in managing large amounts of data too, so that's another excuse for taking some extra stats/math classes. what year are you? n what are some of your concerns about going the trading route? for me, it's because, if I find out I'm not cut out for trading and lose my job, it's a pretty big deal when you're raising a kid... wish I knew of a way to figure out if I was actually cut out for it though : / welcome.
Thanks for the welcome. I already have a B.S. in computer science, and am now doing a post-baccalaureate for a B.S. in mathematics, mostly because I just wanted to learn more math. I'll be finishing up that degree this coming fall. As far as going the quant trading route, well I only have my own romanticized notion of what quant trading is all about, and while I don't think it's too far off from reality, that notion is just speculation. I've never actually talked to anyone that does quant trading, I've only read about it. From what I've read, getting a quant position is very tough and requires impressive credentials. I'm really not sure if I want to devote the time needed to get a PhD in pursuit of this position if I'm not even sure it's something I'm absolutely confident that I want to do. Looking at it written out, this view just smacks of naivety, but hopefully WSO can help build a better picture.
