Why are >50% of the posts on this forum anonymous and does something need to be done about it?
Every other post is anonymous even when there is no need to which stops opportunity to getting to know posters and leaving out genuine helpful conversations. Why is it so?
PS: For some reason my own posts cannot be anonymous. I cannot click on the option eventhough my profile is filled out to the bank i work for
I suppose WSO wants to increase engagement on the forum and tossed the requirement to create an account. I think it's detrimental to posting quality and lower accountability/increases trolling. I'd recommend WSO take that feature away.
i like going anonymous when talking about pretty much anything dealing with my school/bank/anything personal so no, please do not. until WSO adds an easy way to delete comments without having to go through them all one by one I would like to keep the anon feature.
There are pluses and minuses to anonymity, but cases like yours are fringe. Most anon posts are of terrible quality, trollings, or direct attacks on other posters. It doesn't make sense to allow anonymity on a forum looking to provide quality advice to its readers. Your anonymity is protected by your user name.
it’s because of your MS, you have too much. I think it’s something like (SB/MS+SB) can’t be less than 0.7. If it gets below that, you can’t be anonymous.
lol most of my monkey shit was on calling out trump for playing to racists...
well deserved, beta
I get the problem OP has too with being anonymous. I don’t it works on desktops, you can only go anonymous on phone
Just stopping by to repeat that there is zero rationale for anonymous posts in the Off Topic forum.
There is a legitimate reason in the industry forums. Long time posters, who are easily identifiable to other long time posters, can provide cutting insights into individuals and companies or personal insights that could otherwise get traced back to them in real life. I've used anonymous posting a handful of times for this reason.
In the Off Topic forum? Perhaps if you need two layers of anonymity (user name + anonymous feature) to write some garbage take, you should just stay quiet about it.
then it should be limited to folks who are both certified and beyond that have a certain track record of contributions so it's being largely limited to that use case, versus edgy political/ hot take stuff.
That's a fair suggestion. Unfortunately, it has been suggested many times in the past and no changes are made.
The accelerating "cancel culture" is a good reason for some people to stay anonymous. Quite a few people on here could probably be identified if someone went through their posting history and gathered various details about their education, location, job, etc.
Typically it's people who defend the culturally dominant position who feel comfortable being public, and the people who publicly defend less popular positions who are less comfortable- for good reason.
Is there really a huge epidemic of trolling on this site? I don't see it.
idk about trolling. But there's been lots of shitty takes on politics & economics by 18 year olds.
welcome to the internet

Nothing needs to be done about it because we wouldn't have all the hilarious stories/quasi-trolls that I come here for.
All of the good ones don't do it anonymously.
Fair enough - just looked through some all-time threads and a number of the one's that would bust my seams actually were notanon.
It's retarded and I hate it.
Although when butthurt, 21 year-old IBD interns see you talk shit about their school, bank, or exit opps - you better brace. I've seen kids go back on my prior posts and comments just to throw MS when I said x school recruits better than y school for z bank (with facts laid out).
From that I have learned if you speak about any sort or rankings, better go anon to avoid prepubescent rage.
Eh - it's a lot better to simply not care about MS and SBs. Post good content and you'll get more SBs than MS.
I've definitely had people disagree with me and then go through my post history to MS non-related posts. That's comically sad on their part. Also, they're just internet points.
You only get ms because this forum has a hard on for trump
When I started on this forum around 2012-13 for several years this feature was not there. I only recently started being active again and now literallly every other post is anonymous. The forum was actually fine before too and if anything was more engaging.
Anonymous posts and replies take away any incentive to have any conversation whatsoever and I think has detrimental effect on forum quality and engagement.
So I can shitpost or lie about experiences without people calling me out
I really don’t like that I can’t be anonymous because some optically bad posts I make. I’ve given maybe like 3 MS because usually I don’t want to “punish” people for expressing their opinion.
I find that it’s awkward and hope people on this website upvote posts that are different, if not exactly stupid or overly simple.
with each non anonymous detail about someone’s life, the fewer number of people exist e.g. for myself there are only so many number of PE analysts in analyst programs, going to xyz school, have my views, etc. etc.
I can’t post anonymously because I think I’ve been MSed in non topic convos (about BLM or politically decisive) and have been unable to post very valuable info about my salary comp etc without making another account which is annoying to do and I haven’t. Especially for other PE analysts for example trying to find info on other programs, which is highly niche and requires anonymity, I can’t because of off-topic posts. Feel like MS on there shouldn’t crossover.
But no complaints. Not like I really care about the MS or SB, I love this site for giving me something to do while taking a shit like right now. god bless ‘Murcia.
I feel like the anonymity is just giving people the space to spout unseemly commentary they wouldn't otherwise have the balls to express openly.
I enjoy posting funny, raunchy, and crass comments without the repercussion or backlash of being associated with a specific username ;)
Lol people in this thread acting as if throwaway accounts didn't exist prior to anonymous posting. I personally don't mind it, it lets people express their views regardless of how stupid and crass and I wouldn't have WSO any other way.
I agree that there is a lot of low quality content from anonymous users, but like others have mentioned above me, anonymity gives you an added layer of protection to share more personal information. If all my comments were linked to my username, I would be easily identifiable through a quick LinkedIn search. And while that may not sound like an awful thing to have happen, there are potential risks it opens you up to if you come across someone disgruntled enough with your opinions.
I don’t post any troll content and try to be helpful when anonymous, so I view it as a valuable feature for my needs, but acknowledge that it’s been abused by some. Maybe WSO can moderate anonymous content, but I don’t think it would be fair to limit it to certified pros only, as interns and students can still have valuable information to share. That’s my 2 cents

Because Mr. Phillyboy, beneath this mask of anonymity there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, and ideas are bulletproof.
