Why are hospitals seen as demand drivers for hotels?

I see this in hotel OMs - touting a large medical center as a demand driver.

But what’s the actual driver here? Do hotels host conferences for doctors? Do traveling nurses stay in hotels? Do patients family members stay in nearby hotels for serious illnesses / operations?

I just don’t see the correlation there. Apologies if this is a dumb question

Yeah you've hit the nail on the head here. Medical tourism is a thing in certain localities, especially if the hospital is very well known for high standards of service like the Mayo Clinic for example. They attract patients from all around the country/region/world and the family is of course going to need somewhere to stay nearby.

The answer is yes on all your items you list. Generally the biggest is family members staying close to the hospital (this can be true for nearly all hospitals of large size, especially those with specialized treatment centers like cancer centers and large labor/delivery units). Conferences and visiting doctors can be a major thing near near large research hospitals (like those associated with universities). Medical tourism can go along with the large research hospitals, some places (like the above commenter notes) are big for this, but in general this is rare by comparison to the other two.
