Why are you good for X remembering last year's failure

So last year I went to this bank and had a pretty bad interview and was obviously rejected. I think i have very much improved this year and want to try it again. Do you think I could say something along the line of: last year I tried and failed, this year i have improved very much and would love to have another chance.

How does that sound?

I think it depends on what you mean by "pretty bad." Like did you do poorly on the technical questions or the behavioral questions?

I had a similar situation. I recruited for IB internships my freshman year, and got a superday with one of my top choices (MS/JPM/GS) and absolutely ruined it. I came off as too arrogant and got dinged for it. I came back the next recruiting cycle and made an emphasis on showing that I learned from the previous year, and made a conscious effort to be humble and not such a hardo. I got the offer, but actually decided to go with a completely different bank (Moelis, LAZ), where I just got the perfect vibe from everyone I talked too.

I think if you really show that you aren't who you were the previous year, and that you've really grown as a person, they are willing to look past it and give you a second chance.

IMO technical mistakes are easier to recover from. If you came off as likable but unprepared, that's a relatively easy fix. It's really just about whether or not you're willing to take a week or two to read the guides cover to cover and get a real/intuitive understanding.

I would reach out to the VP and Associate that you connected well with and try to get them on the phone. If they liked you, its pretty likely that they will be willing to give you another shot.

I don't think you should bring it up though.

Just smash the technical's this time.

I agree its always a good idea to network and reach out to people at a firm you are interviewing for.

You never know when it could come down to you and someone else and the fact they have already spoken to you and you don't come across as a troglodyte means they choose you instead.
