Why do people call each other kings?

Basically the title. Have never understood why people refer to each other as kings (both on WSO and off). You're not a king. You're probably not even an exceptional person. Maybe I'm just not nice enough to my bros, idk.

This sentence took a drastic turn.

"If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them." - Bruce Lee

i never understood why everyone here refers to everyone else as a "kid". interns aren't kids. 1st years arent kids etc....so stupid imo.

A kid is a billy goat.

I don't think any of these are complete answers, so here goes nothing. Much of what people say today is appropriated from 20th-century black drag-ball culture. A few examples (by no means comprehensive) include "yass," "king/queen", "slaying", "shade", and "spilling the tea." To understand this subculture better, you could watch "Paris Is Burning" or "RuPaul's Drag Race."

I agree and to add to this, after it emerged from this subculture onto twitter etc, it seems to have become especially popular because it expresses the view that male-male interactions are more positive/constructive/supportive than male-female or female-female ("focus on yourself king" / "dont waste your time with girls king" etc). Even if it's used with a degree of irony some of the time, I think a lot of guys would unironically identify with these ideas but would otherwise think it's gay to express it without using meme phrases like this.
