Why have we not let the south secede?

The poorest, most regressive, fattest, most uneducated region in the country, taking in more tax dollars than giving back, destroying America's image overseas as a bunch of ignorant mouth breathers, and they want to secede. Seems like the biggest gift to America in the history of this great nation. Why have we not let them go? I don't even want to see them in NYC.

Now just hold your your horses there, Yankee.

First, let's discuss the topic of recession. The only state that ever had the right to secede from the union was Texas, and we gave up that right when we re-entered the Union in 1870. This historical event is a pertinent case-study on US constitutional law as well as state constitutional law. So if you are seriously discussing the topic, you are just as regressive and uneducated as they are.

Second, It depends on what you mean by "The South" but here is a map of fattest and thinnest cities in the US http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2014/04/06/americas-thinne… .

In terms of Investment Banking, did you know that Energy IB is over 50% of all investment banking activity, and in 2009 it was 76% of it. Also as energy is such an important part of the macro-economy it probably wouldn't be a good idea to lose the south.

As for education, yeah good point for a majority of the confederacy. Just make sure to exclude Texas next time.

Also, here is a map of net taxation. This may provide some color to your ill-formed, mouth-breathing, hate-fill, backwoods, sister-fucking arguement. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:FederalNetperCapita2014.png

Some of the wealthiest, most educated, kindest and most productive people I've met have come from Texas. The rest of the South has its issues, to be sure, but northern states also has its fair share of issues. Your hostility towards the lower half of the U.S. is.. well... Laughable.

Plus, you can keep your 35%+ effective tax rate.

I'm not gonna lie bro, Texas is pretty damn awesome. Also not gonna lie, we don't really consider ourselves as part of the south, more like our own country.....

My ONLY gripe with Texas is that the state is MASSIVE and parts are 100% uninhabited. I've driven the 10 the entire width of the state and there is nothing there. Also driven 40 and other than Amarillo... nothing there

Are you kidding me? My dream is to live in Texas in the desert north of Terlingua! I was born in NYC and every time I try to get away I end up right back here! I have been dreaming of Texas for two years since I met someone from there. Now it seems my dreams went up in smoke since I lost about $30k and am unemployed. Maybe one day!!!

I did live in North Carolina for about 5 years and in 5 different places. I had terrible things done to me by people. They should call that the devil's belt. They are lucky I didn't kill them, but by the time I left they were scared of me anyway. That state's motto should be "Convert you, rob you and then rape you". Seriously, the only people who helped me there were black people. I am white and when I returned to NY I actually hated white people for a while. I also lived in South Carolina briefly and I have no complaints about them.

But when I returned to NYC I realized that there are people here just as rotten. Texas is one place I still dream of: peace and quiet.

I never understood what people have against the South. Sure, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and West Virginia are terrible, but southern Florida, Atlanta, the Research Triangle, Charlotte, Nashville, Memphis, all of Texas, etc. are all great places to live. You can make a great living while enjoying low taxes (except the high property taxes in Texas), low cost of living, the ability to own a huge home, great food, and super hot women. What more could you ask for?

Lol, yeah like 5 cities justifies the entire region. Plus, those cities are hardly considered southern culturally by most people of that region since its the transplants that made them great.

diaosi, often people get angry over being grouped into a stereotype, "profiling" is wrong, etc. In that spirit, many view northerners as arrogant assholes who think too highly of themselves, are rude, and in general miserable fucking human beings to be around. Congrats, you make them all proud and are a true classy representative.

Be proud of paying insane taxes. Be proud that you can live without having an automobile and do mass transit for all. Also be proud of a smelly city (you have to be in NYC) that is constantly dirty.

You don't realize clean air versus dirty air until you visit the city and then come home, night and day apart. People like you think only the north can provide cultural diversity. Sure, it's more prevalent in NYC or such, but when you take your blinders off you realize many cities in the south provide those same opportunities, just without the smugness you have in your overtaxed city.

I have little faith that you are actually successful in life and a post of this nature is spoken with the attitude of someone who wishes to project they have arrived when you are barely in the game.

Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

Believe me, NYC is disgusting. I was born here and lived most of my life here. I can't believe people think it's the greatest. My water smells like shit sometimes when it comes out of the faucet.

Don't ever come to NYC. Go sell car insurance in your hick town in Virginia.

Holy fuck you shit head. Based on your other posts I now wonder if you actually have a professional job.

Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

Sigh, another idiot. Anyone who quotes the "net-tax" spiel is an idiot. The dunce cap wearer who came up with that line intentionally skewed the numbers by leaving out state taxes which are taken prior to federal taxes. One last point, no state contributes more taxes than they take. We have a national deficit, it is impossible for any state to give more than they take because we are all responsible for the national expenditures.

So I see you are clearly more educated than anyone else.
