Why I f***ing love finance
I'm a data scientist. I can take my skills into any industry.
But everytime I interview with companies outside of finance, the more I realize how much I'd not work in other industries. Here's exactly why I fucking love finance and planning on staying in it.
1) You're expected to be aggressive.
I'm aggressive. I got lots of energy and I need to express it. When I interact with other industry people, I always feel like I need to curb down my aggressiveness. If I ever work at a place where I'm constantly trying to curb it down, I'd go fucking crazy.
2) we have very clear objectives.
Let's admit it. We're probably all money-loving degenerates to a certain extent. Most of us aren't ashamed by it. At least I'm not. I really like the work too but money making is REALLY FUN. All I really want in life is to make boat loads of $$$ and play in big poker tournaments.
3) Most people I admire are in finance.
When I grow up, I want to be just like Jamie Dimon. I wish I could hang up his posters in my room. I really admire Jim Simons. The guy talks very casually but you can actually see that he's very thoughtful and smart. Ray Dalio is very incisive, deep thinking, and exact with his words. Only if I could build up similar mental capability. Yadaa Yada Yada. I could go on forever.
4) Only the strong and smart survive.
Yeah I suppose lots of 1st year bankers aren't usually that smart. But everyone I met who survived and doing well are one of the smartest people I know. It also takes a while lot of internal strength to not go bat shit crazy in this industry. The industry is tough. I like it tough. Call me a masochist but I love the grind.
5) Most people around me are in finance.
I like my friends. Most of them are traders and other quantitarive professionals I'm finance. My brother-in-law works at a PE shop. I like these people. They're smart and they are the only people I know who actually enjoys talking about their work.
Anyways, this is my rant. Screw retail industry. I don't want my business controlled by a huge mass of people. I wanna have direct control over my shit. I'm too much of a sociopath to want to help people with biotechnology.
Hi Milton Friedchickenman, the silence is deafening, sorry about that.... Any of the threads below helpful?
You're welcome.
The meritocratic nature of finance is incredibly attractive to us greedy degenerates :)
Cool story bro
You must feel pretty cool for putting someone down.
You know what helps this website? People attempting to post interesting content.
You know what doesn't? Shitting on people.
Sounds like you need to get a hobby outside of finance
I have lots of hobbies outside of finance. Just ranting because I hated most places I interviewed with that's not in finance.
thankfully we've gotten pretty good at weeding out people like you in our interviews..
idk. Did they? I've been in financial services my entire career. I don't plan on leaving nor anyone's making me leave.
Clearly this post wasn't received as I thought it would have been.
All I'm saying is this. I was looking for a change, so I applied to positions outside of finance. It's not unusual for people of my profession to do so. But, I didn't like the people I met from outside of finance. People seemed "afraid" of being a bit aggressive and/or upfront. Some people were completely incompetent. Some just didn't seem to like their jobs. I don't want to work with people like that. Do you?
