Will firms send out laptops?

Intern in IB - Gen

Interning in IB this summer at an EB/BB/MM. I don't have any reliable laptop at the moment, let alone a desktop. Should I borrow money to purchase one myself, or do I wait for the firm to potentially announce that they'll send the interns one?

decent desktop will be cheaper, I say get it now + a decent monitor(aim for 24 inches). KB/M can be cheap.

Will be interning at a MM. They are sending us laptop's and providing a stipend to purchase a monitor. You should wait for an announcement from the firm, worst case it will not take very long to purchase your own reliable laptop.

Banks will send out laptops, if they don't is usually a security risk. Save your money and pray that you get a WFH stipend

ASK!!!

"Hi,
I'm not sure that my current computer is up to the standards needed for this job. Should I go out and purchase a new one, (and what would you recommend?) or can I expect to be issued a work laptop for this internship?"

I'll give you 98% odds that they will be issuing laptops if still WFH. Data security is a serious deal. If we're still in lockdown when your internship begins The monitor is the biggest value-add item. Go big and high quality, although refresh rate doesn't matter outside gaming. a 32" 4k is about ideal if your work budget allows it. Keyboard's next, try to go mechanical. Lastly, consider an ergonomic mouse. It doesn't need to be gaming quality. The goal is to prevent repetitive stress injuries, not increase your kill count in Call of Duty.

I'm a lefty, so my options are a lot more limited. Look for something where your hand is more vertical than horizontal. It's a more natural position. I really hate that the only reasonably priced option I have has a built-in light. One of our PMs has a more subtle righty equivalent that I'd recommend, but I don't know the name off-hand.

the banks purchase laptops and desktop PCs in bulk...by the thousands....and they get a much cheaper price that you possibly could....just use what the bank will give you.

i've been given laptops from 3 different banks. they ask for them back and then the IT group formats the hard drive and then gives it to somebody else.
