Will I have a decent shot at HBS or GSB?
These are the only two schools that I would consider going to business school. Graduated this past spring and am trying to plan for down the line (4-5 years):
Undergrad: Non-HYPSW Target
GPA: 3.76/4.00 in Econ
Work experience: Just started at an EB, but plan on jumping to the buyside after 2-3 year analyst stint
Test Scores: GRE Verbal - 167/170; GRE Quant - 166/170
Extracurriculars: typical check the box type involvement
* Legacy at HBS ..FWIW
If I apply one year and get rejected, can I apply the next year and still have a shot? Will focusing on getting the best buyside job I can improve my chances the most? Will leadership roles or essays be more important when I apply?
Thanks for any insight.
if you land at a buyside shop that tends to send people to HBS/GSB (TPG, Summit, etc) you should have a strong chance
Curious why you didn't apply to any 2+2 programs. Also, why no GMAT?
I've heard that reapplicant admission rates are the same as first time applicant admission rates, so yes you could reapply if you don't get in the first time.
Took diagnostic tests for both and felt that I'd have to put far too much time towards GMAT quant to get a score I'd be happy with. GRE was just more up my alley
As for 2+2 - I honestly wasn't aware that was really a thing until I heard about several friends being admitted.
Did they change the scoring on the GRE? I thought it was out of 170 for both math and verbal?
That was a typo good catch
hbs/gsb always tough to say but with a good fund you should have a decent (50/50) shot. I know 730, mid-tier bb -> "good" fund people who got in and 760, top-tier bb -> great fund people who didn't even get an interview. You never know
I've always thought i was pretty obvious what HBS/GSB want in an applicant, the same good academics / test scores / brand name company on resume which pretty much all the applicants to those schools have plus something which shows SUCCESS IN LEADERSHIP POSITIONS
GRE score looks good and the GRE/GPA combo is attractive. Spend the next few years being the best possible employee you can be and build relationships with senior execs who can write compelling letters of recommendation for you. And don't forget extracurriculars. You don't need 10 things. Pick one and do it well. Too many finance candidates have very little outside of work. Make room for one thing that you are passionate about. And yes, to your question, there's no shame in reapplying. I think HBS has even said directly that 10% of their class each year comes from reapplicants!
