Will I lose my IB internship if I get arrested during a peaceful protest?
Could I lose my IB internship if I get arrested during a peaceful protest? The police can be unpredictable during peaceful protests so I am wondering what could happen if I continue to attend them. There is no looting, and I don't participate in spray painting; I just want to attend in solidarity for the cause.
you can be fired at any time for any reason.
You should be okay - go out and participate if you want.
How long do you expect these protests to go on for?
I am not sure about all communities but peaceful protesting where I am will continue until some demands are met by the police department, city council, school board and governor.
Prob soon. In my area we already took everything from all the expensive stores so the protesting has kinda died down
Participate. No bank should fire you at risk for it leaking and them getting so much shit for it. Thats at least my $0.02
If a bank fires someone or yanks an offer they sure as hell aren't going to tell them why for this exact reason.
Very true. Good point.
wouldn't matter the exact reason to make the media go crazy. "Incoming BofA Intern Loses Offer For Practicing First Amendment Rights". Good thing many banks are supporting the movement.
Getting arrested at a protest =/= getting convicted of anything. Depends on the jurisdiction, but I don't think they're pursuing curfew (etc) charges en masse for peaceful protesters.
That said, as an intern you still don't want anything questionable like an arrest on your record. Stay with the peaceful groups and disperse if you're told to
Only if you throw a molotov cocktail at a police car or at the president
Depends what state you live!
Assume you’re talking about next summer internship. Bank would not find out if you were only arrested.
But if you’re later convicted of a misdemeanor you will have to admit that on every job form you fill out. Including FT at the bank you intern at.
So your internship is going to be safe but are their career risks to getting arrested, of course there are.
Just go to the protest and stay out of trouble, it’s not hat hard.
lol considering the amount of virtue signaling banks are doing, I think you're good.
no
If you're not committing any crimes, why would you be concerned about getting arrested?
If, for example, you were non-violently blocking traffic, trespassing, or peacefully participating in a protest where other protesters were looting or vandalizing, then you should probably worry about getting arrested. If that ends up happening, you should also worry about losing your job and deservedly so.
people non-violently blocking traffic should be run over.
The irony of a group comprised largely of over-privileged WASPs, dressed up for LARPing, screaming at a bunch of random people in their cars, some of whom may be Jewish, or Irish, or Armenian, etc., about "racial justice" (a perversion of justice, which is an inherently good thing) is absolutely fucking astounding.
My family came here two generations ago after having been forced into serfdom, systematically starved to death, and hung because they fought for equality and national sovereignty. So if you wan to project any of your ancestral grievances or your own "white guilt" onto me, you can fuck yourself sideways w/ a lunch box.
I just sat at an intersection for 45 minutes where a bunch of "non-violent" protestors blocked the street, chanted "we shut shit down", and yelled racist and otherwise insulting remarks at drivers who are just trying to get home from work or run an errand. If you're one of those people, you should lose your job for being an asshole and a moron.
Go fuck yourself. I assume you're an overprivelaged white cunt. Idc if I get MS for this, people of color need a voice and the NYPD running over innocent pedestrians (assuming that's what you're referring to) proves the protestors RIGHT. NY is already taking measures to reallocate funding away from the NYPD into areas that can better impact the community. Stop worrying about your fucking bonus and try to see the perspective of the less fortunate for once.
As long as you are peacefully protesting, you will be fine. Even if you are detained, Key is to not break the law.
It's your constitutional right to be able to peacefully protest. Good luck to whatever bank that decides to fire you (assuming you did nothing wrong.) The press would destroy them and swing it as more white privelage, terrible look for the bank. Just don't get convicted of anything.
People who plan on doing nothing wrong are generally not pre-occupied w/ anxiety about being arrested. Particularly when police departments in most major cities have been ordered by state/city government to let protestors do anything up to acts of physical violence or wanton destruction of property.
Be careful with the protests. While people on here keep saying "you won't get arrested or charged if you don't do anything wrong", that clearly hasn't been the case in all cities. For instance in Los Angeles a close friend of mine was peacefully protesting, but then when they implemented a 5 pm curfew (which they let everyone know about at 4:30...) she was detained while literally trying to walk back to her car. They put her and other peaceful protestors in an old schoolbus for 7 hours and then dropped them in the middle of West LA in the dead of night after taking their information and saying they would be in touch with future potential charges. Luckily the current administation announced they wouldn't be charging any of the protestors they picked up unless they were specifially connected to violent or criminal acts, but the fact of the matter is they were still picked up in the first place.
no way you get in trouble for this. Go ahead and support a good cause
I feel like before you do anything you should ask if you are prepared to lose your job. The best way to show solidarity imo is voting and encouraging others to do so when it comes down to it.
I'm just an intern, but if it were up to me I'd fire you for being involved in these stupid protests/riots. Has everyone forgot about corona? Also if you think that most cops are racist or dangerous that proves you clearly can't interpret data and are probably unfit for your job anyway.
Btw I'm an URM so if you want to try and play the race card you can fuck yourself
One can protest police brutality and want change in increased accountability without thinking most cops are racist
That's true I think everyone should take accountability for their actions. I realize my post may have came off as aggressive, but I truly don't believe things are as bad as people are making them seem. Cops rarely kill innocent people, that's a fact. I'd like to say they never kill anyone, but we don't live a perfect world.
Your comment radiates ignorance. Police brutality is a thing, and it's not just about race. 75 year old white men could also be victims. Not all cops are bad and not all protesters are bad.
