Will stimulus bill's rich unemployment benefit delay economic recovery?

A lot of people will make more money on unemployment than they take home working. How will employers get them back to work?

Even Lindsey Graham says it was stupid.

That bill--supported by a republican senate, a republican president and a democrat house---is horrible.

No unemployment benefit system runs forever. People need benefits to survive the economic repercussions of the pandemic. Nobody knows if the recession will be v- or u-shaped. Do not forget that these are people that last month had a job and now ain't got shit. I bet you dime to a dollar that they even lack a substantial emergency fund. Hence the state intervenes to save as many people from financial ruin as possible.

The issue here is not as simple as, there will be a bunch of lazy people who would rather collect unemployment instead of working. Entire industries are shut down and the industries that are not shut down still feel the effects of the shut downs. My lawn guy called me today to say that they will continue to take care of the lawns because home maintenance is considered essential. He was probably calling to find out if people are going to be able to pay for his services.

While the intension might be good, I agree with you on that it will be difficult for many to go back to euro due to the lazyness. While the companies can offer more pay to attract laid off ppl, there will still be many ppl who will want to drag out easy money. I think the way to combat this would be good the gov to set some kind of time line and more stringent requirements around demonstrating that you are interviewing and mandatory interview training... Pretty much something to fill in the time so you are not being lazy.

Think about the alternative. Americans, for many reasons, are horrible at saving money. A mixture of consumeristic society and outlandish bills for things that aren’t always their fault (medical bills are an easy example of this, and insurance companies are the most soulless/ vampire like companies in existence). Most Americans can not afford to be out of work. Imagine if you were unable to WFH and your bonus just got axed, paying for your apartment and other expenses for who knows how many months?

Most people haven’t been taught “the game” of getting high paying jobs. Many people get by running their restaurant or being the day shift manager at a hotel. No shame in that, we need those people. Not everyone can be in IB/ PE/ HF/ ER/ RE/ Tech.

And if those people cannot pay their bills for rent, their buildings can’t sustain their mortgage, the REPE firm that owns them is in deep shit, people get laid off, M&A dries up.. we all know how economics work. Frankly I’d rather pay lazy people to continue sitting on their ass rather than have the entire economy grind to a halt.

Precisely. Mass unemployment later becomes hard to shake off once it gets hold. It's like mold. People can lose their jobs overnight but jobs are being created at a much slower pace.

Case in point: Here in Greece we've had mass unemployment since 2010. From 23% unemployment (58% youth unemployment) the best we could achieve before corona was, like, 16.3% (25% youth unemployment), and with predictions for 13% by 2024. Now with Corona we're looking down the barrel of 40% unemployment and we don't have the ability to take out hundreds of billions of euros to save our economy. We're in for a shit show.

Take note, Americans. You will end up like us if you lose control.

That’s what happens when you are able to get people to forget that they are the taxpayer, not the corporate leaders...

Wait... why are we supposed to take Lindsey Graham's word for anything? To the extent you consider him anything other than a soulless hypocrite and spineless weasel, the only thing he really claims expertise over (other than sucking Mr Trump's balls) is foreign policy. Given his track record on, well... everything, Mr Graham's disapproval is a vote of confidence greater than anything else I've heard.

Second, this is such an insulting attitude. The vast majority of people in this country don't want to be unemployed, and the people who do... well, they're going to live off whatever portion of the government dole they can either way. The poor have pride as well, and don't want to be poor or rely on someone else for their supper, any more than you do. Given the chance, people will go back to work because that's the only way to find a path to finding a more lucrative gig.

Third, why aren't you applying this attitude to our many corporate welfare recipients? Why should American Airlines ever run itself responsibly, try to make a profit, or do anything other than fuck over taxpayers? After all, they can pay themselves handsomely and live on government welfare forever, as they're doing now. And think of how many millions of Americans could feed their families for a year on what just AA is getting in bailout funds.

Your entire attitude, your priorities, your assumptions about those less fortunate than yourself, are vile.

You hit the nail on the head. There are companies that rake in $50B+ in annual revenue that are nearly insolvent after just a month of lost sales and our government lines up to hand billions out. Yet we expect Americans earning minimum wage to have months of emergency savings banked.

An American making $10/hour would've earned $400/week and now they'll get $600/week under this unemployment benefit. People bitching and moaning about fucking $200/week for the poorest earners. But let's keep handing mismanaged and irresponsible corporations billions while calling these American workers lazy and entitled.

in Massachusetts, unemployment can pay up to $900/week...now for 39 weeks + the federal govt pays $600/week for 16 weeks + the federal govt pays one-time $1,200

so, in total we have $900 x 39 = $35,100 $600 x 16 = $9,600 + $1,200 = grand total $45,900 over 39 weeks (about 10 months)

so, $46k to sit on the couch and watch TV for 10 months....i'll bet a fuck-ton of people will make that choice.

So why aren't you doing this? I mean, if you're like many users on this site, you are probablyat a junior or mid-level position in a finance-oriented role. Lets say, aggressively, you're making 250,000 an year.

Why? Why not go home, make 20% of that for doing no work at all? After all, your return on (sweat) equity is infinite that way. What kind of f**king moron are you, to bust your ass for ten hours a day, every day, just to come away with that kind of salary And after tax it's probably only $150!

Either you're the world's biggest idiot (not ruling it out), or you want to make more than a marginal income, want to be self-reliant, advance and better yourself. Which would mean that you think that someone who makes less money than you doesn't have that attitude, solely on their socio-economic position. It means you're just a disgusting, vile troll who thinks "the poors" are just out to suck your income and hard work out of you, with the sole piece of evidence for that position being that they are poor.

So what are you? Worthless scum or complete idiot?

Except that it isn't a "choice."

If you are already unemployed, you're clearly not making that "choice" at all. If you currently have a job and quit because "watching TV for 10 months" sounds good to you, you also don't qualify for unemployment. I'm not sure about MA, but in most states, if you're fired for cause, you don't get unemployment.

most people can just claim they were fired...nobody will ever check with the huge number of people now claiming unemployment...my mom was an auditor for state unemployment...less that 1% of applicants UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES get audited....so now make that less than 0.1%.

this is a free pass...in particular if you work for a small business that does not have automated systems

You have to have a pretty warped view of humanity to think that "most people" would take the time to understand the financial pros and cons, take the gamble to quit their job, have the confidence to lie their way through the system, etc.

"Most people" are not inherently scam artists. If you're low income in this crisis and still have a job, you do that job for as long as you can.
