Wondering how to pick a industry you would like to specialize in ?
I joined my company as an equity research associate (generalist). Recently, my manager asked which specific industry pod that i would like to join. I am curious how industry professional makes such decision as it would affect the future career plan (or even job-hopping).
Especially in Canada, it seems like most of the openings are for “Mining, Resources”. I am wondering if you would choose “mining” in this case? Or what other criteria you would also consider in terms of industry specialization?
Thanks in advance!
Might wanna start specializing in Non-Canada stocks.
Thank you for the reply. Yes I am currently covering North America equities (and 2-3 European names), not just limited to Canadian stocks. Sry for not mentioning this in the post.
I am afraid that if I choose “consumer staples” it will be hard for me to switch to other company due to limited openings.
Wondering if you have any advice regarding this concern?
Thank you :)
Genuine interest in the companies and growth prospects of the industry. Hot sectors will be the hot seats (better pay, better exits etc...), and genuine interest will make spending all day on a basket of 25 names a bit more tolerable.
Thanks for the advice. Will do more research to see which sectors have better growing potential. 🙏
I think biotech makes the most
Thanks for the reply. Just curious if not considering the salary/ bonuses etc, would you still go with biotech? Or you would pick sth else, any rationale behind it?
