work email addresses

Probably a stupid question. I'm a SA at a BB and want to contact other banks and PE firms about job opportunities. Would it be ill advised to use my work email address to reach out to other firms for job inquiries?

On that note, how strict are banks with using work email addresses for personal uses? I want to keep up with my friends and family, but I don't have access to other webmail servers at work (ie. They block out the gmail website). Is it cool to shoot the shit with buds using work email addresses?

Thanks guys

Sure you can use your e-mail to chat with your buds over work e-mail, but BE SMART.

Your bank will have the ability to document every single e-mail you send and receive and they don't just say that to scare you!

I was a first-hand witness to the systematic destruction of Lucy Gao from Citi 2 summers ago, and I hope everyone has learned a lesson from that one.

I wouldn't contact other banks regarding employment opportunities, though. Because, who knows, your boss could ask you to come in her office with an e-mail like that on her desk. That would be awkward.

This recently happened to a friend of mine. I used to use my work email all the time without thinking twice. A very close friend of mine who works at another BB, emailed someone about a possible job opportunity. Somehow that person found out who his MD was, FWD the e-mail and said something to the effect of "You should find out what your people are upto over there, obviously they're not very happy." My friend's direct VP was then called into MD's office and torn apart for not handling his analysts.

Meanwhile, friend is outside smoking a cig, when who does he run into but his MD. So he gets an earful from him outside, but still restrained in public. Goes inside, gets an earful from his VP. Then the MD calls him into his office and gives him the remaining 6 inches of his shaft which he couldn't otherwise expose in public outside.

He's just nearing the end of his analyst program and I seriously doubt he will be invited to stick around.

if you have the above software on your computer, you should still be able to access personal email

Actually, the woman's title was VP and COO.

Also, some of the senior MD's had their assistants have full access to their inbox. Oftentimes their assistants would be the ones letting them know an email came in. It's just funny how reliant some of these guys were on their assistants (one senior MD brought his assistant with him when he came to our group from another BB).

I've seen or heard this happen a number of times with biglaw partners too.

Yeah, this is pretty common among law firms and what not. Most of the judges at the local courthouse have had the same assistants for several years. One of the judges my dad knew actually had the same assistant for the last 15 years or so and the judge took her with her as she just transfered to a different court. I'm sure this is common among lawyers since the assistants handle various aspects of filings that must be done properly and on time or a case can be dismissed.

Sounds like more bullshit from joefish.

Oh, and a story related to poor use of corporate email:

The department I used to work in, comprised mostly of younger employees and with a very gregarious/easygoing VP, used to regularly do practical jokes on each other. When someone stepped away from their desk and didn't lock their computer someone else would open up Outlook and send a joke email to the whole department (~35 people). Typically the email would be embarrassing but obviously a joke. E.g. "Team - I have to confess. I have been hiding it too long. I LOVE FEET!!! When I see you ladies wearing open-toed shoes I just want to get on the floor and lick those sweet, beautiful feet!!!!" Not exactly brilliant satire, but they were usually good for a little laugh amid the normal work email.

Then one day the VP took the whole group out for drinks after work. He went to the bathroom and left his blackberry on the table. The email that went out from his address that night was one of the most offensive things I've ever read (and I'm far from being easily offended). I forget most of the details, but I remember something about how he loved to "violently anally rape" women. Also said something like "Fuck HR, I don't care if they read this." Of course, they did. And, of course, he was fired.
