Work experience to highlight when applying to entry-level financial adviser roles

Hey guys,

We spoke with hiring managers and recruiters at a few of the financial firms we work with and learned what skills and experience they're looking for on your resume. I summarized it in a blog post here.

If you want to skip the post, the TLDR is:

Most desired experience (in order):

  • Working for a finance firm: naturally, on-the-job experience is the best thing you can get.
  • Sales experience: experience selling anything else is very valuable, especially tech, insurance, or even door-to-door.
  • Retail and/or Service-oriented experience: if you're good at dealing with impatient or unhappy customers, that's a plus.
  • Market knowledge through other means: are you reading WSJ? Investopedia? Do you invest yourself or do so with pretend money as an exercise? This all shows initiative and interest in finance.
