Working and Living in London
Hi everyone, I'm relocating from SF to London, UK as a mid level banker at a US BB.
I have no knowledge of best neighborhoods to live at in London and will be working in Canary Wharf. I read some other posts on places to live at in London, but thought my situation may be slightly different since I'm not fresh out of school or working with an analyst budget, or need to be super close to the office although I'm hoping not to have a commute over 30 min.
Some points:
- single late 20s male so neighborhood I live in should be pretty busy on weekends with a lot of young people (particularly women) around, and hopefully not too far of a commute to canary wharf. On flipside, don't think I would be working analyst hours so it's not like I have to be super close to the office.
- based on my base salary I feel like I can afford a one bedroom at 2 to 2.5k pounds a month?? Don't have any context for London rental prices so not sure if this price is appropriate or high/low.
Does anyone with experience in London have any recommendations based on the above? thanks a lot!
Mayfair.. fancy clubs and restaurants, but close to Soho as well. You can take the Jubilee to go to Canary and is not that far coming back with cabs. with £2.5k you should be able to rent a pretty nice one-bed flat
Few people actually live in Mayfair, I would go for Marylebone instead (directly north of Mayfair, more residential / less work-focused). You can take the tube from Baker Street straight to CW.
If you're looking for a less posh / more alternative environment you might consider Shoreditch, it's a trendy start-up / hipster with lots of restaurants and places to go out. It's also quite a bit closer to CW.
Would not recommend the city or anything further east. Also wouldnt go South of the Thames.
I do live in Mayfair and it is really enjoyable. You can rent a flat near the park, it is residential but you are 10 minutes walking to the "crowded" part of West End. I do agree on Marylebone, it can be very nice in some parts, but it is definitely more residential as you said.. Personally I don't like Shoreditch.. I know London Bridge it is quite an "hot" place for bankers, but it isn't nice as Mayfair or Marylebone and I think it doesn't worth the money you'd pay there
thanks everyone for the input. I also heard that notting hill and south Kensington are fun/nice areas to live? But apparently it is more difficult to hop on a train from there and get to canary wharf?
Is Mayfair a walking distance or fairly close by to notting hill and south Kensington?
