Working in internal Portfolio Management or Investment Analysis at an independent RIA

Hi All,

I just graduated with a Finance degree and although I don't have much interest in becoming an advisor, my career trajectory is pushing towards me working the RIA space.

Last December I started an internship at a large RIA Technology & Services firm, my first role was on the support team for the Investment Management Software & my role in particular was more of a product management role where I worked with a bunch of different custodians & brokerages in getting advisors set up to be able to live trade through the software. It was an interesting experience and definitely helped me see how the industry operates mechanically at a deeper level, I still was looking to move into a role that involved more actual money management and analysis though.

Luckily, I got offered a move to the Trading Team over the summer, which is a part of our TAMP offering. Here I run the daily trading and other operations for firms that subscribe to our Investment Management program. Pretty much firms that don't have the capability to run their investment management operations in house or firms that are looking to use this service to scale their operations. With this experience, it has definitely made me interested in eventually moving into internal Portfolio Management for an RIA. Does anyone have experience working in this role? I have some questions below.

How did you get into your current role and what is your background? (assume networking, etc)

What does your day to day look like?

Comp? (is Partnership track common?)

Exit Ops? (doesn't seem like there would be many)

Is there interaction with clients, or is everything internal with Reps?

Future of the industry and of these roles in particular?

Would love to hear people's thoughts and opinions on this. Also, if anyone has any questions about my experience on the Technology & TAMP side of things feel free to let me know. Thanks!
