Working in Wisconsin

Was going to make a throwaway, but who give a rip. Before you berate me with insults, hear me out.

I have in-laws who live near Green Bay, Wisconsin. They are not doing well health wise and I am now exploring the option to move to somewhere within 2 hours of Green Bay, WI in order to be a short drive away versus a connecting flight from the East Coast.

What are some of the more corporate heavy cities in Wisconsin where one could continue in a corporate finance capacity? What cities would be a good start to begin exploring this idea? Madison? Green Bay? Milwaukee? Wausau? Enlighten me. I have traveled to WI with the wife to associate with her family, but have never spent considerable time exploring or considered looking into the local business economy.

Last year I booked a trip to see my uncle as he was not doing well. He died the week before I was able to fly out…my arranged flight was used for the funeral. My grandfather died in the same manner. I had purchased a bus ticket to get to the large city where he was in hospice and I left ONE day too late. These misses cut deeper than you can imagine. I don’t wish for our family to witness similar accounts with their beloved relatives.

Sorry to hear about your loss, and it's very inspiring to hear that you want to help out your family.

I'm not too familiar with Wisconsin, though I have some family in Madison that does work with the university and real estate I think. Finance jobs in Wisconsin are probably going to be based in Milwaukee. US Bank has a pretty large operation there I think, and Robert W. Baird is based out of there.

Thanks man. Getting the call this weekend brought up the pain of my poor prioritization of the past.

Not sure what your background is but Milwaukee's basically your only option, as Madison is dominated by the university and Epic Systems. Your best bets in Milwaukee for corporate finance would probably be US Bank and Baird as mentioned above, as well as MillerCoors, Harley Davidson, GE, Kohl's, Northwestern Mutual, BMO Harris, and Rockwell Automation.

Thank you. Corporate finance (treasury) in both private and public organizations.

It’s pretty much just going to be Milwaukee but there’s a number of large companies headquarters there that have meaningful corporate finance presences. Maybe not the cutting edge of the world but you shouldn’t have a problem finding a gig

Sorry to hear about your situation. Not only is there nothing wrong with what you're doing, but it's admirable. I dont know Wisconsin that well, but I do have a few thoughts:

  • If you have to move before you find a job I think it almost has to be Milwaukee, but I think it's slightly more than 2 hours away.
  • There are daily nonstop flights from Chicago to Appleton. Obviously do what's best for you, but there are a LOT more opportunities in Chicago. Even living in the far north burbs (where there are a lot of F500 HQ) makes it likely a 3 hour drive to Green Bay.
  • If you can start job searching first I think you have to just start targeting the big companies there (and there are a few). Given that you want a treasury position you usually need to be at a HQ. Off the top of my head Oshkosh, Rexnord, Johnson Controls, Rockwell, Snap-On are all Industrials companies that I know are there. I'm sure there are many others.

If you decide to look on the Illinois side of the border shoot me a PM and I can probably assist a little more.

Thank you. This is all a brainstorm at the moment. Heading out to GB this weekend and will see what the plan is. For all I know they will wish to move to a more senior community. They always talked about some fancy assisted living facility in FL. I don't know if that ship is still at port or if it's since sailed. Lots on my mind as you can see.

resident GB fan here and married into a family of cheeseheads. My personal opinion is you should move close by, but not to Wisconsin. Chicago has 9 daily flights to GRB (direct) and I know Milwaukee does too (and only a short drive from Chicago). so if you want to be able to get there in a moment's notice, I don't see a huge advantage of Madison versus Chicago.

Chicago is a 3.5 hour drive to green bay with orders of magnitude more job opportunities. madison is 2.5 hours away. don't let one hour less drive time hamper your career prospects. I did a 3.5 hour drive one way every week for about 4 years. it sucks, but it's doable.

regardless of what you do though, root for the packers, please.

I do dig the Cheesehead community. It feels so much like rooting for the hometown heroes on a Friday night versus a big corporate team in a heavily product placed marketed conglomerate stadium.

Will take a look in Chicago. I have a slight (ok huge) vice after growing up poor in the outskirts and watching the Daley Dynasty destroy the city. Moved East and haven't looked back.

Thread jack, but I also married into a family of cheeseheads (literally, they own a cheese/whey manufacturing co.) Where is your wife from?

I did most of my flight training around Oshkosh Wisconsin. One thing I recall was even in a slow Cessna 172, when flying south I'd have to be careful of Chicago's airspace as it was quite close.

That makes me think you could work out of Chicago and you're a 30 min - 1-hour flight away/3.5 hour drive. I'm sure opportunities are bigger out in Chicago than WI, but depends on if you want to live in a more expensive city/are set on living in Wisco.

I suggest Milwaukee. Its actually almost 2 hours on the dot from downtown Milwaukee to Green Bay and I make this drive relatively often.

Some companies I recommend for Corporate finance positions are

Northwestern Mutual BMO Harris Rockwell (Corporate Development) Quad/Graphics REV Group Rexnord Charter Steel

Another great company that is not in Milwaukee but actually about 30 minutes north is Kohler. They have a TON of Corporate finance positions and a pretty strong corporate development team as well.

I actually live in Milwaukee right now and would be more than happy to answer any questions just shoot me a PM

Plenty of good companies in Milwaukee, green bay area, no need to live in Chicago or Minneapolis, that is just ignorance. I live in Chicago and work in Wisconsin constantly, stay north in cheeseland. Any no fucking was is green bay to chicago 3.5 hours. you leave green bay and hit milaukee rush hour and the tail end of chicago rush hour. more like 4.5 hours to more.
