Working on the ER Pitch

I've met with a few people (Not in ER but in other branches of finance) and have expressed interest in entering ER. The echo is the same: when meeting an analyst/associate, I must perfect my 'pitch', as I am usually competing with candidates more qualified. Once I'm in the room with someone, I have ~5 minutes to wow them. They have to walk out of the room being convinced that I do want to work in ER for the rest of my career and that I would do the job well.

I would like to see the perspective of some of you tackling the dilemma above. Specifically, how would you approach the following questions:

  1. Do you have any experience in ER (assume you don't, other than a ugrad fin degree)

  2. Why ER over say, institutional equity sales?

EDIT: Before anyone says anything, I do have an answer to those two questions. I just want to see how ER associates or people in my situation would approach them.

Personally, I don't think that you can impress anyone by attempting to make the perfect pitch. Been there. Done that. You impress them by listening carefully on what they have to say, asking intelligent and insightful questions, being genuinely interested in the sector that they are covering. That would probably impress any Research Associates and Research Analysts, rather than trying very hard to impress them by making the perfect pitch.

Remember that to them, you are an outsider, you know "nothing" compared to them. To me, it is about managing and feeding their egos. Arguing with them directly or challenging their logic will not win any favors. That's just my 2 cents. I might be wrong and other Monkeys might have a different opinions.

For your specific questions, I don't think giving word for word advice will help. I can only provide suggestions:

  1. Do you have any experience in ER? Focus on why you like the sector and how you become first attracted. Remember they can teach you financial modeling. These people look at the companies within this sector so much that it is hard to do the job without really liking the sector. Maybe you have relevant experience in that sector even though not as a Research Associate. Focus on that.

  2. Why ER over say, institutional equity sales? Again, you like the sector. You enjoy learning about the sector. You want to understand how these companies operate, put together thorough analysis and you want add value by publishing reports that people can immediately put to use. Along that line or logic.

  3. I think you forget to ask the most important question? Why should someone consider you for this position? For such question, you should not focus too much on technical knowledge. You need to focus on what you can do to make the Research Analyst's life easier? You need to answer your question, remembering that you are hired to improve the Research Analyst's franchise? You will only move up and earn more bonus ($$$), if your team, particularly your Research Analyst is doing well. That's the bottom line and that's what he cares about the most.

Hope you find this useful. If you have specific questions, feel free to PM me. Good luck and have a great weekend.
