Working remotely (Canada) while employed in US - for SA stint
Hey everyone,
I'll be working for an EB this summer out of their NY office but currently live in Canada. I'm an American citizen though so am not on a visa/work permit. Am I likely able to stay in Canada this summer, or will I be required to work out of the US (even though my internship is virtual)? Yes, I'm in the midst of asking HR but want to see if anyone has had a similar experience/what the outcome was.
You can stay In canada. I was same situation as you last year, you just use the firms address for tax forms.
Bump
Our US colleagues do this all the time (some of them worked out of Toronto since March 20 and are "based" in NYC). This is fine as long as the IRS know about it and everything is filed correctly.
So I'd just have to get the firm to file under my US address (as they already are) and everything should be okay?
Our firm does this anyway as they are incorporated in both Canada and the US. I am not well versed in tax situations at all, but I believe it happens just like you have described it. as long as the US firm files your paperwork and you declare everything in the US, your actual location shouldn't matter. Technically, you are "based" in the US. However, in certain circumstances expatriation tax rules apply; I don't think SA stints or this case would count though.

you could, in theory, claim a tax rebate if I read the articles and q&a correctly. But I am not sure. Maybe someone with more knowledge could write something.
(you would say you are earning in the US but do live abroad, but I could also be wrong. sorry.)
