Working while sick
Woke up this morning feeling not great at all. It hurts when I swallow, my nose is running and my stomach hurts like a motherfcker. Probably should've stayed home but now I'm sitting at my desk sweating and shivering at the same time with a ton of work to do. Any tips on how to suck it up and get through the day? I also don't wanna be an asshole and get other people sick.
Dude ask to work from home and let them know you feel unwell.
Don’t get others sick.
I have literally never taken a sick day. You would have to be on death's door to need to take a day off work for this sort of job.
That said - don't be an asshole and get your coworkers sick. Ask to work from home until you're getting better.
Yeah I don't wanna seem like a little pussy who has a little tummy ache and ask to go home, that's my fear. But in today's world going to work sick is a huge no no
Wait, are you actually being non-satirical here? If you genuinely feel that you need to be on death's door to take a day off work from HiGh FuHnAnCe then I feel sorry for your friends and family because that’s indicative of an unhealthy relationship with your job (no pun intended), and obviously I'm buying puts on your physical health.
I have things to do. I set my own schedule. Anything that I don't take care of while I'm "taking a sick day" piles up and I have to handle it later.
I don't know how often you apparently are so violently ill that you'd rather push things off until tomorrow or the next day, but for me it's never happened in the 10 years I've been out of college. I'd rather just tell my boss I'm not feeling well, stay home as a courtesy to my coworkers, and continue typing emails and making spreadsheets.
We're not shoveling coal here, people. This isn't some macho-man thing, it's a practicality thing. I take all of my vacation time annually, religiously. How sick do you have to be to be incapable of talking on the phone and smacking your fingers on a keyboard?
Conversely, you're literally just forwarding emails and doing office busy work all days so unless you're closing a deal that day, your work will be just fine if you miss it for a day or two. The mentality of finance professionals not allowing themselves to switch off even for one day is part of all the WLB issues in the industry and why finance jobs turn into such a banal grind all the time.
I think you're missing the point I'm trying to make. It's not about the extent to which you are sick, and if you are actually able to physically do your job. From a mental health perspective, I just don't think it's healthy to have such a strong subservience / subjugation mindset to your employer. If you personally think that your approach isn't extreme and this is just your standard operating procedure, I challenge you to fundamentally evaluate if you haven't been conned or manipulated into this thinking schema through years of putting yourself last and putting your employer first. Not healthy. If you're not feeling 100%, it's usually better to just take the day off even if you are able to "push through". Long-term, taking the personal day off will have an outsized net-positive effect on your quality of life, long after the incremental paper-pushing you would have otherwise done is forgotten. I promise the world will continue to turn and your employer won't fall apart at the seams without your spreadsheets.
Your job status says “other” - we literally have no idea what you’re talking about. Are you a crane operator or something?
