Worth going to coroporate presentation?
I mean, you can try networking with the analysts there, but really in the end when they review resumes won't they just try to go for the people with the best work experience, and highest GPA when determining who gets interviews.
The only thing it's really worth for is picking up some company materials and learning about company "values" and other BS that you can later repeat during your interview. I used to go to all of them but then I got tired of it and didn't go to any at all and was still being invited to all interviews. I don't think it really matters that much unless you want to suck up to the head recruiter big time and hand him your business card so that he at least remembers your name. Then it might be worth the time.
There are more people with strong academics and work experience than there are spots. Assuming that your resume is half-way decent, networking at these events can give you an edge over that other candidate who is just as good as you or barely better than you.
I mainly go for the information, not networking. You can learn about various positions in more detail. For example, you might know a lot about Citi's Investment Banking Division but might want to know more about its Corporate Banking practice or Capital Markets Origination practice. Then you go the presentation, pick up the materials, see what the company has to say about these areas, and then talk to the representatives to see what the employees have to say about them. And like T73 said, you can learn about the companies' strengths and values for your cover letters or interviews. (Where are they headed?) They make decent answers to questions like "Why us?" You can say, "I like how this company...[right out of the brochure and what the people you talked to said]." I also tend to go when the company is small and has little information elsewhere. Moelis and Silver Point Capital come to mind.
Networking can work if you do the follow-up, but in my opinion, it doesn't really matter in most cases if you don't have the qualification to begin with. So I would say even the mingling part after the main presentation is mainly for information first and networking second.
And of course, a lot of them have decent finger food, cheese and crackers, or maybe something more substantial like pizza and sandwiches.
Free food and booze. Also, there is that one off chance that you meet a VP/Associate at one of the smaller events and they remember you.
