Would a double major be worth it?

I am a freshman hoping to go into IB in the future. I am currently majoring in financial management with a minor in accounting, but at this rate I will graduate over a year early. Would it be worth it to add a second major, and what would employers like to see / would be helpful in the future? I was thinking either accounting or economics, but I am pretty much open to anything.

There are many benefits to a double major but also negatives that come as well that you should be aware of. It’s great to add a second major as long as its tailored torward your specific goals and something you are actually passionate about or enjoy. Subjects like you mentioned such as accounting and economics are good for establishing a solid fundamental base. You can even look into statistics, mathematics, or computer science if you want to go the quant route. All of these provide you with helpful tools and give you the ability to differentiate yourself.

As previously mentioned though, there are some negatives that can potentially come along with this. Adding a second major, specifically in STEM, can increase your class difficulty which could hurt your overall GPA. But if you do enjoy the second subject and are sure you can handle it the benefits really are helpful. Just be sure to outline YOUR specific goals and choose a major suited to you rather than allowing people on this site to choose for you. The last thing you want to do is end up with a second major in mathematics when you know you really aren’t into it.

There are a few other good threads on this topic that address areas such as using the extra time to focus on networking hard and nailing down the technicals. It’s great you’re starting early and best of luck WSO is a great resource full of smart individuals!
