Would you renege GS/MS/JPM for Google Finance Internship?

non target junior.

Option A Pro's: GS/JPM/MS
-Great training, learning opportunity, brand name
- Historically high FT conversion rate (>70% at the bank/group)
-nice people
-I don't have to put my reputation in question and piss people off/ burn major bridges...

Cons
-NYC is meh
-long hours
- don't see myself in ibanking long term ( > 3 years)

Option B: Google
- it's Google
-sweet perks, better culture, creative, "googlyness", quirky diverse folks
- Mountain view >> NYC
-See myself there long term

Cons:
- few get full time-offers, you hear back months later vs. last week with BB.
-I'm going to piss off the BB and will be potentially blacklisted for FT recruiting for being a flake.
-Although I would probably have more fun there for 3 months I'll learn more at the BB.

I don't know, I'm learning towards just politely turning down Google and maybe taking another semester so I can qualify for an internship next year and (possibly) get it. I don't want to tarnish my reputation so early on in my career, a lot of people pushed for me to get that offer but Google is my dream company... sigh

Crazy shot- but do you think GOOG would be receptive to me doing a fall internship -I can take online classes at my uni/take semester off since i have 3 classes left for my major.

swish41mavs:

Try to do Google in fall, I would not renege. Keep in touch with GOOG and try to get a FT there.

Thanks Swish, yeah i'm trying to tell myself that this isn't the last shot ill have with them even though it feels like it.

Definitely the banks. And that comes from someone who plants to leave banking b/c my passion is technology!

At Google, you won't get as good a skills set and the above comments are right that you are basically back office and treated as such. I know plenty of people who work @ Google, Facebook, etc and say the perks get old and that they'd rather make more $.

Keep your options open. Definitely banking.

IBD over GOOG. I'd bet that you have more doors open to you after IBD and backing into Google, rather than immediately jumping into Google. You won't be hurting yourself by spending a summer at GS/JPM/MS. Also take a look at some of the full-time positions at Google. The interesting (relative) positions tend to have prereqs of 2 years of IBD, MBB, or VC/PE.

I'm not in tech, but I did 1.5 years of PE than transitioned into a corp100. The options available were much better than had I jumped in immediately after undergrad.

Agreed with everyone's assessment of BB IBD > Google. Unless you're coming in as a technical hire or you've been selected in one of their prestigious programs, most roles you enter moving into Google as a new grad are fairly uninteresting (imo). While lateraling to a "better" role is certainly possible, it can be a difficult feat and is something many of my friends who work at Google struggle with.

The more interesting roles on the business side (i.e, Google BizOps, Corp Dev, etc) usually are filled by ex-bankers/consultants, which is why generally speaking I think it's a better to go BB. Having gone through the process (and receiving an offer that I declined), my personal view is that if your goal is to just get a decent job at Google it's not as competitive today as people people might perceive.

I've written all this with the assumption that your goal is to maximize career prestige/compensation; but there's no shame in going to Google if you're more a lifestyle guy - it's a pretty awesome place.

@SidelineStory Thanks for adding the perspective of someone who got/declined a GOOG offer. I think IBD will definitely help me rebrand myself and the skills/network will be a good launching pad.

Yeah Google is amazing, coming into work with shorts/flip flops is sweet
