Wreck my cover letter (European target)
Any help is appreciated, thank you for your time
Dear [Bank’s name] HR team,
I am pursuing a BSc in International Economics and Finance at European Target University.
I have been introduced to your spring week internship at a career event at my university.
After having spoken with the recruitment team at a career event in my University, and with xyz I was positively impressed with bank’s commitment to excellence and the values of integrity, disciplined management, responsible growth and [specific others]. Moreover, the working environment, a challenging and exciting atmosphere with people from different cultures and backgrounds, and the growth opportunity are the core features that convinced me to apply to this program.
I have always had a passion for finance, and this led me to proactively search for business programs, and every opportunity that could enrich my knowledge and experience. Through a program at [X Venture Capital firm], I gained knowledge of the digital business world but also improved my analytical, leadership and teamworking skills by developing a start-up model.
I also had the chance to take part in other programs, that allowed me to learn more about banking, financial markets and asset management, and this is why I have chosen the [name of division] division.
Given my background, I believe to be a suitable candidate for the xyz program at your firm. I am extremely motivated to learn more about [sector], eager for experience in the financial industry, and I honestly hope that I will be able to take part in this precious opportunity to gain an insight on bank and the [division]. I look forward to joining and effectively contributing to your firm.
Sincerely,
XYZ
props for trying to outsource your dirty work to the internet. writing a good cover letter is a skill you need to develop yourself - if you can't sell yourself, what can you sell?
fwiw, it's too generic. could be used for any bank interchangeably. you have not spent enough time discussing why that bank in particular (recent performance that impressed you, specific teams you might be interested in, how they differentiate themselves from competitors).
also taught more about relevant skills for the job (excel, powerpoint presentations, networking, blah blah blah)
they get 10s if not 100s of thousands of cover letters every year - yours need to stand out, and so far it does not.
oh, and use some league table figures about the firm and your team of interest. banks love that shit. unless they're shit :(
Pardon my ignorance, what are league table figures? Regarding the "team specific" argument, right now I have only applied to spring weeks that are multi-divisional. This applies also for the job specific skills, since there is no job to be done at least for now. Are there some other tips you would like to share? Thanks
the m&a team, dcm team, ecm team, etc. how do they rank vs their competitors. hence, league table. not rocket science.
Thank you for your feedback, this is just a template I am going to use and them fill it up with bank's specific information, tailoring it using the job description and similar... I am in my first year and I figured the only way to improve this template was sharing it. Thanks again!
Try to sell more. Try to figure out what they want, and then write down how you can give them what they are searching for. For instance they want more profit, your skillset will increase their profit (+real life example). Hope this helps.
Thank you, very helpful
My biggest piece of advice is to make the cover letter as specific as possible to the company. Think of including something about recent transactions or a specific aspect of them that makes them different (aside from corporate values and culture). Preferably, something that makes the internship different from competitors and why it's important to you would make your cover letter stand out.
When someone reads the cover letter you want them to know which company you're applying to even if you were to delete the name throughout the document.
