WSJ wine deal
Hey are any of you really good with wines? I'm trying to get smart on it right now but still no where close to where I would like to be. Anyways, I was looking into this WSJ wine deal and was wondering if it was a good deal. The price looks really fair (66 bucks for 15 bottles). Why is this so cheap?

Wine folly is a pretty decently respected blog for beginners. She doesn’t go in depth about WSJ specifically, but she calls it out as pretty sketchy at the bottom of the article.
I like to think I know something about wine, but it really depends what your knowledge level is. If you just want a good deal on cheap wine and can’t tell between varietials and good/bad, sure it’ll work. But if you are trying to learn to appreciate good wine, it’s probably the wrong choice.
You probably know much more than I do. I'm at the point where I'm trying to get the grape varietals right. How would you suggest that I approach this? There is so much shit and nuances to learn its ridiculous..
I have bought wine from WSJ more than once. You're certainly not going to find a $50 bottle in the mix, however, the prices are quite good. I've checked/compared the prices elsewhere, WSJ is definitely a decent deal for what you're getting, you are paying $5-9 per bottle with tax & shipping, compared to the more typical retail/non-club prices in the $8-16 range. I get it delivered and it saves me a trip to the liquor store.
I usually buy a mixed case before Thanksgiving so I have bottles to bring to gatherings as well as to flesh out the home bar. I also buy a case to take when we go on vacation and rent a beach house for a week. Each case comes with "tasting notes" that you can keep for when you find something you really like and want to be able to remember it for future purchases from your local liquor store.
I would also recommend signing up for www.vinepair.com emails - it's a fun website that's mostly about wine, but they also have articles that discuss beer, rum {I was actually reading a piece this morning on there about aged/sipping rums, looking for new names I've yet to try] and other alcoholic beverages. They do "top X list", they offer cocktail recipes, they discuss drink trends, they do "101" articles where they give you a mini-lesson on a particular kind of grape or liquor and much more.
Club prices are often so low because the club is buying in bulk and passing some of the savings along to you.
