WUSTL vs Tufts for IB

Hi Everyone, this is my first post on WSO. I'm been really mulling over the decision between WashU and Tufts and wanted to ask you guys for input. I am thinking of potentially going into finance (not sure what exact route yet) after college. Here are some pros and cons for each.

WUSTL: pros – bigger school, better brand name, has a business school to combine majors with, great campus. cons – location, lack of good placement in New York, student body seems a bit bland
Tufts: pros – has a varsity sport team I can play on, good International Affairs and Quant Econ majors, closer to New York. cons – inferiority complex compared to Harvard and MIT, student body is not very finance focused (not sure if this is good or bad), lower prestige

So, what do you guys think? Which school places better or has a better reputation on Wall Street?

I’d go with Washu. Both are great schools with no doubt. But as you said, washu has finance major in undergrad, and also from what I see, their placement isn’t that bad. Good in Chicago. You will have to network hard no matter you go, so, my 0.02c

Great schools. You'll be fine at either school. While WashU may have a larger finance presence, the opportunity to play a varsity sport is special and would heavily consider that

I think I'm the wrong person to ask since I'm an athlete and ave 0 offers. But I've heard from people that it helps

If you can play a varsity sport that you enjoy in college, go do that. You'll have more fun and it'll make you more attractive for recruiting.

Do WUSTL. Go on Linkedin and look at the IB placements for NY. It's below what it should be considering the school's rank, but they relatively well regardless, and I can't imagine there are a lot of being gunning for IB there. Tuft's placements are worse, not bad for a nontarget, but worse than WUSTL.

Comes down to playing the sport imo. You won’t be playing any other time in your life so if you really love this sport, you should strongly consider it. The sport will help with jobs but mostly just to demonstrate your work ethic and contribute to your “story”. You can have an equally strong story at WUSTL given you keep yourself busy. However, playing varsity in an already difficult college is a huge commitment.

6 vs 1/2 dozen in my opinion. Both are similar-ish types of schools as far as placement goes. Not top tier, but if you're a top student, you'll be able to access most good jobs post graduation. As others have said, it comes down to fit, while both schools might have similar rankings, they will have different feels. Tufts is a Northeast, smaller school, liberal arts type of vibe. It will be a little more Northeast prep type of a feel, which isn't a bad thing, it's just something to be aware of. If the sport you're going to play is lacrosse or something like that and that's been the environment you grew up in, then you'll probably feel at home. One other thing to note is that while both schools will have similar placement, Tufts will likely have a stronger network on the East Coast whereas WUSTL will have a stronger midwest and southern presence. That's not to say you couldn't go to WUSTL and end up in NYC or vice versa, but something to be aware of. WUSTL is obviously in St Louis, if you're coming from a northeast prep school, it's going to be a different vibe, again, not a bad thing, but the general student body will be a little different.

At the end of the day, I'd pick the place that feels the most like home. Visit both schools if you can, talk to alums, decide if you want to play your sport, how you get along with the guys on the team, etc or if you kind of want to try something new, have nicer weather, perhaps a slightly less uptight vibe in the South.
