You hop in an Uber...

And the person who is proud to pay off their debts in 5 years is talking investments. You spout the usual S&P500 shit, but they’re talking stocks.

What are the 3 questions you ask to set them up to research enough to understand modern finance?

I put in my headphones and pretend I'm on a call - the logical response..

Ironically, I ended up in almost this situation last week. My high school class holds twice yearly get-togethers, and we're basically all the 1% intellectually (god there are a lot of lawyers) and one of the engineers decided that it would be more fun to pick my brain on investments than discussing the maximum snow load on the roof of Arthur Ashe stadium.

The short of it is that nobody really knows anything, and if they did they wouldn't share. The average investor is definitionally average (gross of fees) and Vanguard's eating all of our lunches. Our flyers might or might not be correct, good luck, and have you tried the bulgogi? It's awesome.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.
