You May Soon Be Able to Take A Drug to Prevent Depression

As someone who gets stressed easily (not to the point it causes serious mental problems), reading this article was intriguing. The article dives into the research of neuroscientist Rebecca Brachman. The article states that Rebecca is:

working on the development of a drug that increases resilience to stress–and because exposure to stress can trigger depression, the drug could help prevent the disease.

This wouldn't prevent a person from experiencing stress, but it would prevent the stress developing into PSTD or depression. Currently through her startup, Brachman is hoping to get this idea off the ground as soon as possible. The author states that the inspiration behind this idea was;

While in a doctoral program at Columbia University, working with neurobiologist Christine Denny, Brachman studied the effects of giving mice an injection of ketamine, the drug known as special-K. When the mice were later put through a series of stressful situations, they were less depressed, less afraid, and more social than a control group. That effect lasted at least a month, long after the drug had left a mouse’s system.

She hopes that this could drug could be modified to help prevent other mental illnesses, such as OCD, or bi-polar disorder.

Many of my friends who struggle with mental health issues, all seem quite interested. This may even become used by students who put too much stress on themselves, or high-stress environment jobs.

Do you think that this will go far or that those with mental illnesses will actually consider it?

I haven't read the article but what strikes me is the target group ranging from mild depression to severe mental health issues. Maybe it comes down to a question of dosage but I would probably not seek to be the early adopter.

I was hit with some pretty severe vertigo a year ago following stress and anxiety (couldn't even drive). Beta blockers helped me navigate through stressful situations and regain my footing. Some amateurish meditation has also helped me - 10 min a day with the Headspace app. I was very sceptical about meditation prior to trying it, but it honestly does feel like returning from a mini-vacation after those 10 min.

I'm curious as to the side-effects of Beta blockers and these "amateurish meditation" you took. I've been looking for something to calm my stress/anxiety for quite some time.

Beta blockers block receptor sites from adrenaline. They counteract heart palpitations and lower the risk of heart attacks, however, they also help against the emergence of panic attacks and overwhelming feelings of stress and anxiety. Unless you have very low blood pressure, the side-effects are very mild but may include drowsiness, headaches and nightmares for some reason. They are somewhat addictive.

The side-effect of "amateurish meditation" is the opportunity cost of dedicating 10 minutes of your day to sitting still and doing nothing. A potential side-effect may also include your surroundings thinking you are a vegan hippie.

make sure you have a good diet heavy in dark greens. spinach, kale, asparagus etc. lack of vitamins and nutrition can cause stress and diet is usually overlooked.

I tend to get bursts of anger but ever since i brainwashed myself to care less about situations that gets me fuming. breathe in and out. another coping skill is simply to just switch it off and think out something else. I have seen alot of improvement, mentally, spiritually, and physically.

Lost alot of money in a trade? Well it's in gods hands now, nothing you can do to change the past. atleast you lived to make another trade. Don't believe in god? Well believe in something cause it will give you the edge over someone who doesn't. Even a peaceful hobby like gardening, or screw it go release that stress at an MMA or BJJ gym.

I understand it can be hard, just never give up. Don't let a snowball gain momentum and turn into an avalanche (depression).

You can also check out sun gazing which has profound effects on combating stress. practice of sun gazing can even help you become a better performer at whatever it is you do.

Apparently when you become stressed, your body releases certain types of hormones. You just need to measure these to see how "stressed" an individual is.

1) The school I go to just happens to have many people in that situation. 2) Thanks.

I agree. Some people might have chemical imbalances and shit, but most people are just depressed because they're fucking losers. Depression is your subconscious telling you to fucking do something productive.
