Heavy metal is the greatest music on the face of the Earth, Macro. "Traced In Air" was excellent, but I don't think they'll ever top "Focus."

Have you had the chance to listen to the latest from Opeth or Mastodon yet?

Opeth are very entertaining live. Great band!

I was a fan of Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth a ten or so years ago. Still listen to that, but not so often. Dimmu Borgir are definitely worth going to when they are performing live, they do a great show.

Agreed, saw them live and they're one of the few bands that actually sound better live in comparison to their recordings.

I'm yet to check out the new Opeth album but the new Mastodon is just awesome, but I can't say that they topped their previous stuff. Traced in Air is actually one of my favorite albums of all time and I do believe that it exceeded Focus.

The new Animals as Leaders is good but I doubt it can top their previous self-titled album:

What's happening next week Flake? More Bear Fights? We shall discuss.

You know, it surprises me that there aren't more metalheads working in finance. Hip-hop, Top 40, and 80's music make up the lion's share.

I don't really have favorite metal bands or anything (with the exception of Rammstein which I don't think people consider real metal), but I do enjoy a few specific songs by Mastodon, Sepultura, etc. Recently, I've been into epic/folk/viking metal for some reason, stuff like Ensiferum, Finntroll, Amon Amarth.

No more Bear Fights. Ok maybe just one.

Amon Amarth + Ensiferum are epic. Saw them with Children of Bodom a couple months back. Trivium and Behemoth are still my favs though :)

Hammerheart is a masterpiece. Would also recommend the other two albums in the Viking trilogy: Blood Fire Death and Twilight of the Gods. They were planning a four-part Nordland series of albums as well, but only finished two of them before Quorthon died. They're both excellent as well. Shame, really.

@Feeling Mean: YES! Bathory is essential metal listening; they have done more for black and viking metal than any other group.

@Flake: Rammstein is industrial metal. Still counts.

@Macro: Dark Tranquillity is one of my all-time favorites; those guys are almost in a class all by themselves. Judging by that group you listed, have you sampled Children of Bodom, Whispered, Falkenbach, Thyrfing, Eluveitie, Wintersun? There's a lot of overlap with folk metal.

Those are sick and I'm really digging Whispered and Wintersun (Beyond the dark sun has some really sick riffs). Yeah, Melodic-death does have a lot in common with Folk Metal and they tend to get grouped together. Never really gave Children of Bodom a listen for the past few years since they became a bit too mainstream. Do check out Insonium, Ensifrum and Kalmah as well if you haven't.

Another noteworthy band is sylosis, but they're a bit more thrashy:

Hm, I thought Bodom was really only mainstream in Finland and elsewhere. Either way, you can't go wrong with their early stuff (especially "Follow the Reaper"). They slowed down a bit on the "Blooddrunk," but it still sounded like them. Not a big fan of their latest one though.

Yeah I could totally hear the older CoB vibe. As my prior posts in this thread indicate, i'm still not really a fan of the new CoB.

Wasn't a gojira fan until I heard their recent album:

Back in the day - pretty much went through all the rounds for various subgenres. Still have particularly (un)fond memories of the days when I listened to FDM like Ahab and Evoken. Nowadays I still jam to Agalloch and Deafheaven though

Speaking of Germany, have you ever heard anything by Tobias Sammet? I really dig his supergroup Avantasia. It's not death metal heavy by any means; it's more along the symphonic side. I REALLY enjoy this niche area of metal. Great vocalists are really cool.

Of course - Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, Beatles, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, CCR, Jimi, The Who, etc.

I'm pretty indifferent when it comes to EDM/Trap stuff. I'll rage to just about anything but don't normally listen to those two if I'm just drivin around. I get most of my playlists for those from fratmusic.com and then modify them. I love EDM concerts though. Here's a clip from a Krewella show we went too when it came through town last spring. Yeah I've heard Edge of the Earth. I've made my way through all of their LPs, I started digging into their EPs last night.

Conclusion of an Age is by far one of the best metal albums Iv'e ever heard. EotE and Monolith are still kinda coming around to me. They jam really hard and I like em, but Josh Middleton doesn't have the same high range that their past singer Jamie did. I've listened to 2012/13 live performances and his vocals are improved a lot, so I'm really excited for the next album they put out.

Sylosis is definitely on the fast-track to my top bands though. Every 2 months or so a band will come around that I'll get into and literally spend the next couple weeks listening to/researching them so I can get an idea of progression and where they're going. Fundamentally, my process is the same as how I look at a company which I thought was pretty interesting when I noticed it.

I find that most 'extreme metal' fans tend to be very narrowly focused on those specific genres in order to remain 'kvlt', to the extent that they become religious about it which I guess is somewhat ironic. In any case, just found this on metal injection- the timeline on black metal's history (I lol'd @ Misfits): http://www.metalinjection.net/video/an-animated-history-of-corpse-paint

Anyone recognize the Immortal song that was sampled?

Being close minded in what music you listen to is one of the quickest ways for me to not like someone, haha. I agree that extreme metal fans tend to be narrowly focused, but from what I've seen it all revolves around whatever 'sub-genre' is seen to be "better" in the case of two. Take a Trivium song from Ascendancy for example. This was a really important album because it laid out a template for metalcore bands to follow, but the music itself is not what you would consider to be "metalcore". In the comment section for any popular song from that album on YouTube you're bound to see an endless argument with thrash metal fans or fans of In Flames or Death (the primary influences on Ascendancy) bashing metalcore for various reasons. Why? And who the fuck even cares? People who can't enjoy a song because of how its categorized are really sad, in my opinion. I'll listen to any song at least once, but to dismiss an entire genre just because its not as "metal" as another is ridiculous. My favorite metal bands are over on the extreme side, but that didn't stop me from having a blast with some friends at an A7X concert last month. Everyone seems to hate on whatever genre I guess you could consider a step down from whatever they happen to be listening too. @In The Flesh One of the reasons why I want to spend at least a couple years of NY is due to the traffic of bands that play through. I looked at a metal calendar for the NY clubs and was blown away at the lineups just for the month of November. Whereas where I live we might only get 2-3 really good bands playing through every year or so :|

Anyone have experience with Insomnium? Just stumbled across this album, and holy shit. Sounds like a cross between In Flames' Whoracle and Colony, with a dash of Opeth thrown in.

//www.youtube.com/embed/KdZyte0EN5Y

in"the""Flesh Yeah, just another reason why NY is the best city, but Over Kill and Kreator in the same gig is just nuts... That's like a Big 2 show.

@Stryfe Agreed! Ascendancy was the first metal album that I listened to if you exclude stuff put out by Metallica etc. I used to think that the song "Rain" was the most brutal shit ever. I listen to a bit of Insomnium but I wasn't aware they had a new album so thanks for that.

Seeing these guys tonight, one of progressive metal's most criminally-underrated bands.

I like this. Was the concert good?

Some days are Machine Head days, and today is one of 'em. Robb Flynn is one of the few musicians that I admire on a down to earth level. I was beyond thrilled to hear that they signed with Nuclear Blast. I've given up hope for Roadrunner Records. After hearing Trivium's Vengeance Falls its clear that RR is the definitive mainstream breeding label now...but I think I've known that for years, but just haven't wanted to admit it. If you dig enough into Machine Head's history the majority of the band's problems have been with RR wanting them to make more mainstream music, so I'm really excited to see how the new album turns out.

This would be really good if it didn't have vocals. In my humble opinion, the only metal bands with good vocals are Braking Benjamin (BB) and Five Finger Death Punch (FFDP). I used to hate AD/DC until I learned how to ignore the vocals.

I checked it out, great review! Such an important album in metal history, TJR overtook The Gallery as being one of the most popular albums from the early Gothenburg metal days. The song Moonshield, one of my personal favorites, was a beautiful answer to The Gallery's Lethe. The Jester Race was the first In Flame's album to feature Andres Friden on vocals, which previously had previously been performed by Mikael Stanne (Dark Tranquillity), and Henke Forss (Dawn). One of the things I like so much about the Gothenburg Metal scene of the mid-late 90s was the amount of collaboration between all of the bands in the area, nearly all of them were friends and assisted or performed with each other's projects. I can't help but think that one of the reasons why the unique melo-death sound that was formed was due in part from the friendly nature of competition amongst everyone.

While on the subject of bands from Sweden, this 2nd single from Sabaton's upcoming album is sooo sick.

@Stryfe : man, you should do a guest post sometime, or comment more often! Jester Race is more melodic, Slaughter of the Soul the most riff-centered, The Gallery overall the heaviest and a healthy medium, in my view. Like the same character, but different traits being emphasized in each one.

Yeah I would agree with that. All three released in 1995, which I would mark as the start of the melo-death explosion. Edge of Sanity released Crimson in 1996 which was huge for the incorporation of Gothenburg riffs with more traditional death metal, and also because...its Crimson. Definitely of my favorite albums from that period, too.

After I finish the semester next week I'll be able to get to writing somethings I've been wanting to do, too.

@ITF, got any recs for a girl who recently got interested in metalcore? xD Not exactly your subgenres of choice, but the little EDM kid I used to be in middle school has had her interest piqued.

@chicandtoughness : Shadows Fall, Machine Head, Hatebreed, As I Lay Dying, All That Remains, August Burns Red.

For the stuff THEY listened to/were inspired by, check out Sepultura, Discharge, GBH, Agnostic Front, and Napalm Death.

And, I'm sure @FeelingMean will chastise me if I don't include Black Flag, Bad Brains, and Cro-Mags also as key influences. Underoath is considered more screamo, but it's in the ear of the listener. @chicandtoughness

I've listened to Trivum and enjoyed them, same with All That Remains (The Last Time

@chicandtoughness, @intheflesh there are so many directions to go. Grew up going to Hatebreed, 100 Demons shows etc, but can't really recommend that ignorant style on here with a straight face. The bands I think you should really check out have an asterisk

@chicandtoughness - special recommendation: Torche. Super heavy and melodic, clean vocals.

Staples:

Cro-Mags* 108* Shelter* Leeway Killing Time Hatebreed Integrity* Strife Earth Crisis Trial****** Inside Out* (Early Rage Against the Machine)

"2nd Generation" (Probably more in line with what you are looking for, more melodic)

American Nightmare/Give Up the Ghost* Coalesce* Converge Shai Hulud* Poison The Well Unearth* Grade* Underoath* Snapcase Boysetsfire Darkest Hour* Most Precious Blood Zao Evergreen Terrace Norma Jean Every Time I Die Fear Before The March of Flames

Feeling pretty nostalgic right now, haven't thought about some of these in 10+ years. It was fun digging.

"That dude is so haole, he don't even have any breath left."

Recognize a few of those, thanks for the huge list! My bent has always been the symph / neo-classical / folk-ish stuff, so I'm sloooowly trying to expand my horizons. Got brutally thrown into death and thrash stuff by the roommates, haha.

If you like neo-classical stuff you should check out Children of Bodom's first two albums. Something Wild is my personal favorite of them. If at first the vocals turn you off don't disregard it they take a little bit of time to click, but the focus of the songs is on the guitar, and the vocals should be interpreted as an additional layer of heaviness.

I've listened to their more recent albums, I think the first one I heard was Blooddrunk and I liked it. Will take a listen to the others!

@chicandtoughness : Neoclassical/progressive metal is great stuff, @"ThaVanBurenBoyz" and I got into a discussion on the "albums to hear before you die" thread. He prefers his prog instrumental, but you really can't go wrong with Dream Theater and Yngwie Malmsteen for that, either.

@Stryfe : For the new listener, I know it isn't ideal, but they just released a 20-song greatest hits compilation for Children of Bodom.

Metal. Music. Life. www.headofmetal.com

Yngwie is awesome, I love his early stuff.

I don't think CoBs compilation album would be a bad place to start. It has a mix of all their styles, but leans more on their riff-heavy thrash side. My only fix to it would be adding more songs from Something Wild and different picks from Hatebreeder.

I stole my Bodom playlist from this YouTube video which would also be a pretty good place to start.

New Fallujah slays.

And the cover art for Hammerfall's next album makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. If the trend of stagnated power metal bands returning to their roots becomes a thing I don't know what I'll do with myself.

I would've sold both my kidneys and my liver to go to the Ozzfest with that lineup.

When you say "recovering," do you mean you've moved on from metal or are you trying to get back into it after it lost appeal for you?

Metal. Music. Life. www.headofmetal.com

I mean it's all I used to listen to before I went to college, I still listen to it just not as much and I haven't really heard new stuff since 2005. And yes it was the best concert of my life. It never lost appeal but I started listening to it in middle/high school so I guess as I grew up I wanted to try different genres, but metal will always have a place in my heart.

Friday's pump up song! Skip to 2:50 for solo of dreams.
