Wearing watch to interviews
I think it's stupid but I've heard that some interviewers are extremely picky about not wearing watches. Its apparently conservative and formal to wear a nice wristwatch to let people know you are conscious of time. I could buy one, but is it worth it?
Agree that everyone should own a watch, but the thought of you needing to go buy a watch for the interviews is ridiculous.
You're not a little kid anymore; get a nice watch. It doesn't have to be overly expensive or flashy but every man should wear a watch.
i think you're taking the interview process a little too seriously. if you don't get called back, it has nothing to do with your watch. same goes for getting an offer.
would you really want to work for someone who is basing their hiring decisions on your accessories? are you interviewing at investment banks or teen vogue?
HAHAAHA teen vogue....nice one...that cracked me up. I guess ppl in both places are similar, all uptight and superficial people full of drama.
Buying a watch for the interview is only ridiculous because he doesnt own a watch. Buying a car to drive 50 miles is only ridiculous because you dont own a car, not because buying a car is ridiculous.
If buying a watch makes you feel more confident in the interview, buy a watch.
make sure that you buy a mickey mouse watch. interviewers love it.
i've had a few superdays with case studies. wearing a watch definitely helps cuz the interviewers never tell you how much time yo have left and you need a watch to see how much time you have left to preprare and present the case
I wouldn't rule out the possibility that interviewers will notice that you're not wearing a watch. Some associate commented that I didn't have a leather portfolio to carry my resume (it was in a school marble paper folder). Many bankers are shallow and judgmental.
one time i took my resume out of those white manila folders and handed it in the interviewer. he then proceeded to lecture me for 10 minutes about how completely unprofessional that is, and how you should never wear white aldo shoes to an interview.
Forget buying a watch just for interviews, you should have a nice one for work. Thus, if you don't have one, you should buy one because you'll need it anyway. Just to add: During my senior year in college, one of my roommates' dad was/is a CEO at a F500 company. Towards graduation, he came to visit and gave all of us (the roommates) some advice for our careers. I kid you not, one of the things he mentioned was to have a nice watch for work. He made his son (my roommate) buy one before he started work for his company.
Angelo Mozilo?
hahaha white aldo shoes. hilarious
This whole watch stuff is all lies, I'm at a BB right now and I've been around MD's, VP's and one specifically told the guys never be flashy at work with your watch. He flat out said look around at the MD's at the bank, they've all got the plastic watch on when they're at work, Hank Paulson wore a plastic watch everyday he was at Goldman and still wears it. I'm not saying don't have nice watch but its not the start or end of anything. Some of the most senior guys at my firm have the plastic swatch watches and they couldn't care less.
So do whatever you want, don't feel the need to join any trends because as long as you act and look professional. All that matters is your work
Agreed. Everyone has their own style... but I really respect the guys who pull down 7-8 figures and wear a $30 watch. They're truly secure with themselves.
If it makes you feel better about yourself then get the watch. You don't need to break the bank either. Like KB24 said above, if it's a plastic watch then that's acceptable too. A decent Citizen eco-drive is $300 and will hold up for awhile.
At the end of the day these guys care if your work will be produced neatly and quickly (and that they can stand being around you). If you feel like wearing a watch will help portray that in interviews then get it.

What is a more appropriate style for young (prospective) bankers? Leather strap or metal bracelet, gold tone or silver tone, etc? I personally like a black leather strap with silver/stainless tone watch.
(i.e. One that looks like this, but less expensive: http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=351464&CategoryID=2…)
I like silver, silver. Silver bracelet and silver head, then a nice face. It is young, classy, and conservative.

What do you guys think of these (I do not yet have a paying job so this is all I willing to spend at this time): http://www.amazon.com/ESQ-Movado-Folio-Stainless-07300770/dp/B000F3QOE8 http://www.amazon.com/Citizen-Eco-Drive-Black-Leather-BM8240-03E/dp/B00…
I agree with BankonBanking (although I also like black leather) - Seriously guys, a $30 analog Timex is all you need - nice, durable, efficient and it grows on you

Luxury watch to Entry level interview? (Originally Posted: 08/20/2012)
So I have a first round interview with a well know PE firm and I need some advice.
Thanks to being born into a well to do family I have a nice collection of watches that I wear on a daily basis. I would really love to know the etiquette on wearing one of these watches to an interview. My suit is a Hickey Freeman so its already pretty evident that I prefer the finer things in life so would it be bad form to wear lets say my Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Chrono, Sea Dweller or Yachtmaster?
Any advice would be appreciated.
They're going to care about your competency and your demeanor. If someone devotes their attention to your attire, odds are it is not with positive connotation. There is a difference between dressing nice, and dressing over the top. So, you probably should leave the yachtmaster at home
lol
Lol, sometimes I can't tell if people replying to trolls know its satire and are also being facetious, or actually think the trolls are being serious. Nicely done.
Why would you? What would that add to your interview? Compliments? No. That kind of stuff will only hurt your chances. Worry about killing the technicals and your actual interview rather than if you should wear your $15k watch
edit: i have fallen to the troll
Horrible troll, at least do it right.
Only wear a watch that you bought yourself. I'm in a similar situation to you, and I always wear one of the three watches I bought for myself over the years with my income. The inherited Audemars Piguet is only worn for family/private events.
Nice try, though. A for effort.
Lol don't you mean "E" for effort?
Agreed. You typically wouldn't want to appear too flashy, especially on a first interview. Once you're onto round 2 or 3 and you have a better idea of the typical attire at the firm, then you can break out the Nardin if you deem it appropriate.
we have the valedicktorian from the tool academee right here
I can't tell if it's a joke - but I'll bite. I would generally err on the conservative (ie, non-flashy) side. An $800 Brooks Bros suit and a $500 Tissot would probably be optimal.
no-one will care about your watch.
Wear at least one on each wrist, that way there's less of a chance they miss what a badass you are.
Not really, they are going to evaluate your attitude, skills, competency and patience. They don't mind about your attire. Enact that you are going to take this job seriously and you won't be leaving without notice and what more, interested to learn new things.
Smartwatches to an interview?? (Originally Posted: 09/20/2014)
What do you guys think about wearing a smartwatch to an interview. I have the moto 360, which is definitely the most dressy and non-obvious one of the bunch. It'd also be muted.
I'm thinking best case its a great conversation starter. Worst case, they don't notice. Would anyone actually knock you for wearing one?
Wear it
The worst case is they don't notice? ...really?
Agreed. Worst case is much worse than that. Worst case is they think you're a hack, clown and you don't get a 2nd round. What's the point of risking it? You will never get positive points for having a nerd watch and no one will talk about it outside of awkwardly acknowledging that you are in fact wearing it.
I guess it depends where you're interviewing. Maybe you're interviewing at Google in which case it's probably okay and you probably shouldn't post about it on here.
No. You don't want to be forever known as the clown who showed up to an interview w/ a smart watch, do you?
As long as your watch doesn't start flashing lights... you're probably good.
You guys take these minute details way to seriously, relax.
.
Judging from the comments, is it safe to say that Wall Street has a certain disgust towards nerdy stuff in the workplace?
No, tons of nerdy people on wall st. An interview is not the place for a fashion statement.
First...you're thinking way too much.
Second, clearly nobody here knows what the fuck a Moto 360 is. Take 2 seconds and google it. Most people wouldn't even notice it. If they do I highly doubt it would be a negative reaction. If you're really that worried, don't wear it. But I really don't think it would be a problem.
Lmao just don't wear a flashy watch and you're good man. No one gives a fuck about a $300 "smart" watch.
No upside, potential downside. Don't wear it.
I had never heard of that watch but the pictures actually look really nice. There is no harm in wearing it. How do you like it so far?
Sounds like I'll probably leave it off lol.
@"Cruncharoo" I like it. It's hardly noticeably different from a normal watch. "Glance-able" information I find very useful so far, I think it's a more meaningful implementation that Apple's "1 inch iPhone". Good battery life, waterproof, affordable, no big complaints so far.
I never thought I'd say this but this new generation of smart watches don't look half bad.
But OP, first no one will really care. People on here place way too much emphasis on what you wear to interviews. As long as you're not wearing a vintage '80's neon Swatch you'll be fine. Or a really awful bright tie with something stupid like beer bottles on it.
Second, if you're not comfortable with wearing that watch, don't. You don't even need to wear a watch at all. I used to be a watch guy and for some reason last summer stopped wearing them much at all. No one looks at me like I forgot to put my pants on. Half the time I have my digital sports watch that I wore to work out before I go to work.
You def should use the calculator on the watch to help answer technicals
Wear a normal looking watch. High risk wearing a smart watch. Most people will judge you.
probably fine, but you do run the risk of be discriminated against.
Personally I would find it weird, but I also probably wouldn't notice.
I doubt it would make or break you, but if you were a weirdo in the interview, there would be a compounding effect.
Followup question, what do you guys think about wearing a clip-on tie? Worst case they think it's a real tie?
is it for IT back office?
It's a conversation starter and you can direct the conversation to technology deals/IPOs, etc.
