Networking with Vice Chairman
Through some luck I've got a phone call set up with a former vice chairman at a BB who now works in another role for the firm. Does anyone know exactly what it means to be a vice chairman in terms of the corporate heirarchy? I assume he is up there since he has been at the company for 30+ years but I don't know much else. He is a really really nice guy and I'm looking forward to the chance to speak with him since I'm sure there is a lot I can learn.
A Vice Chairman does not usually have a direct say on the running of the company and, depending on the firm and individual circumstances, may be retained by the firm more or less for his reputation and name (think Weinberg at GS). The below may also help:

That said, the theory goes that he may be there to guide and assist some of the more inexperienced executive officers, so it has the potential to be a pretty influential role. Since the individual in question is undoubtedly high-profile, google him and learn as much as you can.
Given that, approach this event in a relatively relaxed manner and get him to tell you a few anecdotes or “war” stories.
Vice Chairmen have access to the corporate jets. They're their mostly as figure heads for shmoozing with clients and being the face of the company. They don't have day-to-day responisbilities. However, they have a ton of pull and can help you tremendously. Without question they can get you an offer. Play your cards well and be sure to follow-up with a thank you note.
I have a phone conversation with a Vice Chairman at a large I-Bank soon (think CS, DB, Barclays). I was wondering how I should approach this conversation. I already have the interview lined up, but my goal is to see if I can get him to pull for me internally. Any advice?
Stick to high level questions and conversations; ie, don't ask him what the typical analyst day is like. Ask high level stuff about the firm, his industry/market perspectives, how he got to where he is today, etc. During my SA stint last year, the firm's Vice Chairman would fly out to our office whenever there was a really important pitch with a big client. He basically flew around managing big-time client relationships and was used for his reputation in deal sourcing efforts.
WTF are you talking about - plenty of VCs are also group heads .... play your cards right
.
GordonsGecko is right - vice chairmen don't drop out of the sky - typically the head of a large group (GIG, FIG, M&A, etc.) is the step before VC..
It varies from firm to firm the VC's position before or during their role as VC, but whatever it was/is they still have a ton of pull. If they like you, having them put in a good word with HR or a specific group can pretty much guarantee an offer as long as you don't completely bomb the interviews.
