IT Consulting Exit Opps
What are your thughts on career development and exit opportunities at a smaller capital markets focused IT consulting firm (think itg, Sapient capital markets, Capgemini)?
Anyone know about compensation for first few years?
Thanks

BB IT consulting exit ops? (Originally Posted: 03/26/2013)
Hi, I have been working at a BB as a business analyst in its IT department for a little less than a year. I want to move because I find this job too unchallenging.
My personal choice is to move into management consulting but I have heard its really tough. I wanted to know if people here could assist me in realistically assessing what exit ops (without going for an MBA) do I have.
Since I am a recent graduate I hope that I wont get bogged down in BB IT...
Maybe you should post this in the consulting forum.

I did but there doesnt seem to be any response so I thought maybe people working in IB might know better about exit ops
I agree with your logic, IB people will know better about consulting exit opps than actual people in consulting.
Just an FYI, people here shit on anything that isn't IB/PE/HF, so make sure you have thick skin :)
It's hard to connect the dot between BB IT to Management Consulting once you are full time (if you were an intern at BB IT, you could apply to MC full time and that'd be easier). You can probably try to do IT Consulting if that's what you want. I know someone who went from BB IT to MBA to MBB. If you are already there for a year, might well take another couple of years to do MBA (which will happen couple of years after you transition to consulting anyway).
Outside of that, your exit opportunity is basically doing IT work in other firms. I know someone who went from a BB IT to a large CPG IT (he was more generalized vs. coding for a desk type specialized). Not sure what else your expectation is around exit opportunities.
@abacab I am actually a business analyst and so am in more of a IT consultancy role...I am not doing coding or developing but making Functional requirements for projects and such..
I was wondering if that might be transferable to something like Deloitte IT consulting role? Something like this mycareer (dot) deloitte (dot) com/us/en/students/programsinternships/undergraduate/businesstechnologyanalyst
I already said you can look into IT analyst roles (in Big 4, IBM, ACN, Capgemini, etc.).

'if i really hate the industry and want to leave quickly'
...you shet yourself already. Why don't you excel at whatever comes your way since you took the job for a reason.
'15 hours of homework each day' is the reason why you did not hear about other careers. You can easily switch to engineering because consulting is viewed well in the field. Although it depends what projects you work on in your firm. I suggest you kick ass every morning at work, then once the afternoon comes around and peopple slack of ... start kicking ass some more.
Finally, work for a year before considering any other options. Giving yourself a negative start will only mess your careers up. Be thankful you have something and don't make assumptions about ivy kids on this forum.

Diesel Mechanic, Dealership parts counter, etc.
Brohammer, I was in a similar situation to you where I saw at graduation that a lot of people who did better than me in school were unemployed - so I took the best offer I had, which was far from my dream job. I am giving it a shot and it has really been turning out a lot better than what the few people I know in IB have been dealing with.
What I am planning on and what you should target is working your ass off to get a promotion. Once you level up once at whatever job you start working on (promotions from entry level are much faster than anywhere else in the business), start sending our resumes again and tapping any connections you have to transition to where you want to be rather than where you think you can get in.

as impressive as your SB-MS ratio is, your posts are much less amusing than mine. im sorry you'll be making less money than me next year working at a less prestigious firm (can you figure out where?). have fun driving your pre-2000 used geo-prism.

so since no one's telling me otherwise, I'm assuming that i can't go anywhere with the experience besides move up in my company or do other things in the same field? I don't see myself doing computer work for my entire career.
2x2, do you know how long i'd have to make the jump to engineering? because that's a more attractive career to me than IT. I'm thinking about giving it 6 months and, if I want to, applying to 2011 fall recruiting positions.
