How to move into Consulting within the firm
Hi everyone, thanks in advance for your replies!
Assuming that I do a good job over the summer and they offer me a full-time position, is there any way I can indicate to them that I would like to be in the Management Consulting division? Should I indicate this before the end of my internship? I know that the market is tough, especially for someone who didn't attend a private school/top public school so I really do appreciate the opportunity and I don't want to lose it. Would my indication ruin my chances of getting any offer from them?
Thanks again for your time, I really appreciate the insight.
Management Consulting has core target schools and you will find it easier to transition to System Integration side instead.
You should wait until the end of the internship and if you receive a full-time offer then mention that you loved your experience at the firm but would like to be in management consulting. Demonstrate that you are hardworking, high-performer, etc - and if they like you enough to want to keep you they'll transition you into what you want.
Thanks for the suggestion, I will most likely take this route. Appreciate it.
Better to do consulting in any Big 4 rather than Accenture.
Thanks for your replies. I will look into "system integration". @manutd yes I know that the Big 4 would be perfect but I don't think have any chance due to the fact that I don't attend a core target school. I also forgot to mention that I'm a Finance and Economics double major with a minor in Political Science; I would really like to do something that leverages at least two, if not all three of those fields. Any suggestions? Thanks again for the replies.
Isn't Accenture MC more selective than Big4 Advisory?
Indeed. On a very general scale, the only Big 4 consulting position that's more selective than Accenture MC is Deloitte S&O. PwC, E&Y, KPMG, and the other Deloitte service lines are not the place to be if you want to at least some strategy/operations work. Note: Deloitte S&O does considerably more high impact strategy and operations work than Accenture MC.
Source: I am an Accenture MC alum that switched into MC from SI after attending a non-target state school.
To the OP: I'm not sure which ACN service line CFM is, but it doesn't sound like SI. Is that one of the internal non-consulting positions? If so, your road to switch into a consulting workforce will be considerably more difficult (although I have seen a few people do it).
CFM is client billing/accounting support. It's basically the guys that run your monthly WBS report to see if the project team is above/under budget and do projections for next few months. MC is just too high of a leap from there for a normal individual, but might be a consideration for an intern (except not being in target for MC will suck, they are more strict about it now). CFM has good looking girls though.
network network network. CFM is actually a good place to be imo because you get to touch a ton of projects. itll be a pain and it might take you a while, but its possible. and you have to standout quite a bit to switch from CFM into MC. i would suggest that when you are working with projects, ask them how you can help them do their job better (e.g. i know the financial tools can be annoying - suggest building out simplified excel spreadsheets or something).
good luck
Thank you all for your replies. Really appreciate the warmth and helpful feedback. Yes, I understand it's quite a challenge and I hope I perform well enough. In terms of performance, what are some things I can do that would really separate me from the rest? Thanks again.
Hi all - just a quick update. Internship went very well. My evaluations were quite positive. I will find out in mid-Sept if I'm "offer eligible" and I can then decide if I would like to pursue MC instead of corp finance. If I do decide to purse MC then I will have to go through the interview process all over again and will have to forfeit the corp finance offer. Would love some advice and your thoughts on this :). Thanks in advance.
