Career change to Consulting

Looking to see if a career change into Consulting is a viable option for me. My background.
B.S. Nursing with 4 years as ICU Nurse
10 years in sales and distribution for medical devices. As a distributor I have experience with Fortune 100 companies and small start ups.
Currently working on MBA in corporate finance from unranked school. Looking to make the jump to a Life Science consulting role when I complete my MBA.

Healthcare, at least where I am, loves to see that hands on nursing work. The distribution work would make you a strong SME in a supply chain context like analyzing category management, or maybe helping improve RFP's. Those should be able to get you through the door in my firm I would think.

From there, the bigger picture work depends on how well you impress people once you're in. Then again, I think where I am from seems to put more weight on what you've done, not where you went to school, which seems to differ from the East Coast crowd a bit.

Thanks for the feedback so far. Undergrad is an average GPA from a mid level school. Work history is my most impressive attribute. Top sales performer in high technology medical devices and bio surgical products. As a sales distributor I worked with many VC backed startups to help launch new products. The other concern is that my income is 250K and I am sure I would probably need to take a pay cut to break into consulting. Hoping once I am in and performing well the upside will be greater income within 2 years or so.

Well in my country, I believe most of the big 4 top out $200k for directors with maybe 25% at risk pay...so maybe $250k all in if you're really good. The US firms pay more I believe, still that is a tough salary to jusify when they've never seen you consult / manage clients / win work before or ultimately deliver a project.

Maybe MBB's looking for a sector expert would have that pay band, and I may be way off base for the US firms bands as well.

Good luck,

TT

Focus on a resume that speaks volumes for the skills you've acquired as a nurse and how those skills are transferable to consulting. Good luck.
