Internship or School?
Hi,
I may have the opportunity to intern full time for 40 hours a week at Egon Zehnder, a leadership management consulting firm in the fall. This would effectively mean that I would take the semester off from classes at my college.
Is it worth it?
What year are you, what is your post-college goal, and what kind of internships and how many have you done?
what? You don't have to go to class to pass classes. Do the internship, study after work since it's only 40 hrs per week, and take the tests/do assignments as usual.
id just scale back and take a 6 credits or whatever. work experience is important!!
just take the semester off it wont make a difference
Why not work there, take the semester off and still graduate in time? If you have enough transfer credits, etc., you could do it
Executive search firm... Headhunting hardly worth graduating late IMO.
Didn't know that. That changes everything!
Wouldn't do it if it is only/mostly headhunting work
Work experience over a semester of school for sure
You did read that it is headhunting and that OP wants to get into management consulting (I am assuming), right?
Ask if you can intern part-time. See if you can balance the two out. I think its counter productive if you just delay a semester of school.
If that's the field you want to work in when you graduate then you should do it. Otherwise, of you are just trying to get experience to fill your resume and want to go into another field then I would say no. In the end, your résumé has to make sense and explaining a semester off when it isn't normal for your school would be difficult.
Take it. 1 semester wont kill you.
Egon Zehnder isn't really a management consulting firm. It's mostly an executive search firm and not worth skipping school for a semester. You can find a different fulltime internship or two part time internships that would be better for your resume.
You have to answer that question for yourself. I don't know your career goals or if/how the internship will help you reach them. You're the only person who does...seems like people start threads just for the fxck of it...no pre-thought whatsoever.
There's huge network potential in the role, if you end up knowing the people responsible for hiring at a bunch of EZ's clients, that woud be a good use of your time.
That is not a management consulting firm. Why the fuck can't they just admit what they are?
If you are looking to get into management consulting, you better be able to explain why the hell you took a victory lap to graduate. Your scholarly performance and branding is important to a management consulting firm, they don't want their clients to think they hire 2nd tier candidates to handle their strategy work.
If you are talking about an MBB internship, then by all means do it. This internship will do more harm than good.
Imagine you are a hiring manager and you see this kid took an extra semester to graduate, but you gave him a chance to interview. When you ask him what why he took an extra semester and he said he did an internship that is completely not related to your industry or the job he's interviewing for, will you not see him negatively?
The only times where it won't ding you on an interview with taking an extra semester to graduate are: - You defeated cancer during that 4 month period - You felt compelled to head out to Haiti to help those poor folks that got devastated by the earth quake - Your folks both loss their jobs and you had to hustle to keep the family afloat - You got kidnapped by the cartel because of mistaken identity and kill your way out of captivity
