Career advice - 1yr post MBA

I graduated from b-school last year and have been working in a business development & strategic planning role at an energy company. I'm currently working out the short-term growth strategy for our group as well as the 5-year execution plan. However, I have a few hard choices ahead of me. My gf is moving to North Carolina due to her job and I want to move down to NC with her. However, that would mean I will have to switch jobs and am trying to figure out what that would look like. I'd like to stay within the energy industry but think it might be better to continue in an advisory role. The industry is interesting but personally I'd like a faster paced position.
I have two asks. First, what is the usual process for post-MBA hires into consulting firms? Second, and more importantly, will the projects I undertake be similar to my experience (strategic planning/growth strategy/business development)? If not does it make sense to work for a startup company in cleantech?

Thanks!
