Stepping Stones to Consulting
I am interested in securing a position at one of the top 3 consulting firms (MBB) upon graduation ( I attend a top 2 business school).
The summer after my Junior year should I intern at NERA Economic Consulting or intern again under the advisory practice of a Big 4 accounting firm?
Which internship will serve as the best stepping stone to MBB?
Thanks
What's stopping you from getting an MBB internship the summer after your junior year?
its nearly impossible after junior year...
Which advisory practice & with which firm? Advisory covers a huge variety of work...
Have you considered 2nd tier consulting firms (OW,ATK,Deloitte)?
2nd tier consulting would be best. Banking is also a good option, so are F500 financial analyst internships for their FLDP programs.
Why are you interested in the "top 3" consulting firms? Is it solely because they're the top 3, or do you have any real experience with these firms?
If you're shooting for these firms after graduation, why aren't you trying to get an internship with these firms after Junior year? You say its impossible, but if that's your mindset you may as well quit now, because if you don't think you're competitive for the internship, you will probably not fare much better at full-time recruiting (compared to the many who will have interviewed and failed, but at least will have the experience and some networking points of contact within the organization).
Have you considered tier 2 firms for your internship? I think those will help much more than econ consulting or a big 4 advisory arm for full-time.
And what is a "top 2 business school?" I lol'd and assume you're at a school like MIT or UCB.
Can finance internships be stepping stones to M/B/B? (Originally Posted: 09/19/2007)
Just curious - how impressive do pretty-solid finance-type internships look when it comes to ultra-competitive junior year consulting internships? I come from a fairly well regarded school (HYPSW) with above average leadership and what not, but my GPA is a bit sub-par (3.4/3.5ish), so I'm wondering how much my strong finance experience will help out here...
Any opinions?
As a point of reference, I have a ~3.3 from a non-Ivy, and had an I-banking internship my junior summer. I've gotten past the first round at every consulting firm I applied to.
It has to do with you ability to sell yourself, and reason your way through the case interview.

Hey guys I'm a senior at a target, graduating in Dec 2013. I'm primarily interested in consulting but unfortunately I've been rejected by MBB and other 2nd tier consulting firms. Which firms/positions should I be looking on now to step up my game for consulting FT next semester?
Also, I'm an international student and I have previous work experiences in Wealth Management.
Thanks!

I'd probably say corporate strategy, IB, corporate finance
in that order
