What makes a top candidate?

I've spent most of my career working database management/research positions in higher education. Last year, mostly because I was interested the direct service side of education, I started teaching humanities at a secondary private school. I'm 28 and would like to move into consulting. Assuming I make it over the first hurdle and get into a top MBA program, do I have any shot at becoming a top candidate for MBB or Accenture? Or would recruiters look at my non-profit, non-TFA background and pass me over. I know at places like Ross and Tuck, only about 20% of candidates make it into MBB.
