Fixed Income to Equity Buy-Side Career Switch

I've been working in FI at a large pension for 1.5 years now after graduating from undergrad and would like to transition back into equities. I work in securitized products, which is more specialized and less relevant to an equity role than a corporate analyst would be. I'm trying to figure out what the best strategy is for moving to a equity buy-side job and how to position/frame myself coming from a job that is somewhat different.

Would coming from fixed income make one a less competitive applicant for an equity job?

I'm also wondering whether it's best to find an equity job before business school or if I would have similar career prospects by making the job switch in business school.

Any and all thoughts appreciated.
