What types of jobs would someone from a non-finance STEM undergrad be able to get?
I am a junior Chemical Biology major/CS minor with a 3.5 GPA at a target school. I've taken upper division math, data science, and CS courses but nothing econ/business related. I might take Mathematical economics next semester.
My original plan was to go to a PhD program but the job opportunities that would be available aren't that great for the amount of work I'd put in. I'm considering going through with the PhD and then applying for management consulting, data science, or IP law jobs if I can't get a good industry job but that also seems wasteful.
What are fields that I can try and break into with my background? My older brother is also a VP of EFT trading at a very large bank so I guess I have contacts in the industry.
IB boutiques hire STEM undergrads/other related questions (Originally Posted: 08/20/2015)
Hey guys -
I'm a physics major with a computer science minor at a Big 10 school. I'm organizing a docket of places I'm going to apply for a summer position, but I had a couple questions for you guys first:
First, should I look exclusively at the bigger/BB banks? OCR at my school is functionally nonexistent (I'm going to have to do a lot of cold calling), but I understand that studying finance/business is not a prerequisite for an analyst position at a lot of these places. It is like this at the boutiques? Do they hire STEM undergrads?
Second, how should I leverage my skills (employment in technology, skills at modelling) to my potential employers? What specific skills do these people look for in quantitative applicants?
Third, should I be looking more at back end developer positions than front office money-facing positions? I inevitably want to end up at the front, and I am afraid of pigeonholing myself if someone discovers I'm okay with code.
Thanks a lot in advance guys!
Anyone?
Yes. They do. Network.
Also look at quant shops.
Will do!
Great information, thanks a lot! I guess the back/front distinction is kind of stupid.
Specifically in regards to the boutiques hiring STEM majors, a friend was able to break into a top boutique from Civil Engineering undergrad.
And I myself am also a CE major, will be interning this fall at a BB in BO; hoping to get into IB.
That's really interesting, I've never heard of CE for finance. Are you guys at targets?
