How to set myself up for a career in Corporate Finance?
How to set myself up for a career in corporate finance (preferably FP&A) as a rising junior? Seeking Career Abroad (Native of India). Suggest Some Career Paths as m Just a Student with BBA degree!
Need advice on deciding on a job to eventually get into Corp Finance (Originally Posted: 09/12/2015)
I currently have two potential job offers but I am not sure which route will help me get into corporate finance down the years.
Just a little back story-
I finished my undergrad last year with a non-business degree and took up a marketing analyst internship, which transitioned into full-time, at a mobile dev company for 7 months. After the company was acquired I got let go and began to consider other opportunities that interested me more - picking corporate finance. I have been applying to a lot of places (incorrectly) for entry level back office or analyst roles hoping to catch a break to build any sort of relative industry experience and then climb the ladder.
One of the routes I chose was via retail banking - which is one of the offers. I got offered a position at a bank's call centre as a credit card sales associate. Based on my conversations with some of the people I have networked with at the bank, it is absolutely possible to move around vertically and across departments, just depends on how fast I want to do it.
My second option - a manager from my previous (mobile dev) company has offered me an opportunity to come back and work for her as a strategy business analyst.
I am not sure as to which route will offer me the better experience and competitive edge to enter corporate finance. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Another thing that is on the table is doing my MBA to better my chances of getting into the industry.
Side note: Cumulatively, my professional experience includes 2 years in marketing. I also intend on networking more and cold calling to create leads for internships. Things I which I knew to do before I found WSO.

It is all up to you either choose your previous job or stay in corporate finance field which is I think your interested field. Always choose those things which make you happy in doing. So, Don't think more and go ahead.

However you try to spin the call centre job, it's always going to be seen as a call centre job first, and anything else second.
The strategy job gives you much more credibility and flexibility with how you want to frame it and build your story to recruiters going forward.
In my opinion, the second option as a strategy business analyst is a much better choice if you eventually want to enter corporate finance. The skill sets are more relevant than what you'll be able to obtain in a call centre job.
hands down your 2nd option is a way better choice. Strategy can lead you to Corp Finance or consulting. call center is a dead end
Couldn't agree more. Corporate strategy is likely to be more interesting as well.
Go back to the strategy job and don't think twice about it.
A banking job isn't a banking job isn't a banking job (granted, this is coming from a guy who grew up the son of two bankers but has never stepped foot in a bank as an employee)

A little about my background I have a BS in accounting in alabama. I plan to start my MBA fall of 2017. What are some ways I could break into the corporate finance industry in Birmingham, Al. In my current position I'm a store manager at a check n go so I guess I would have expierence in loan orgination, in my previous job I was an auditor for an insurance company.
