Can I wear these shoes to an Associate interview?
Bought the AE Yonge Street Leather Derbies about three months ago and debating whether I should go buy the AE Parks / 5th Ave or just wear these to my interview. Any advice?
Can't post the link - I am not an experienced chimp yet!
Unless, I'm looking at the wrong shoes online, those look similar to any 'classic' style cap toe shoes. I assume you're referring to the light brown color? If so, it's probably fine but I usually prefer to wear black shoes or dark brown to an interview. In the end, you won't be dinged because of your shoes.
Thanks a lot - super helpful! You've just saved me $400! I have the black ones and absolutely love them!
Love the Park/5th Aves, but I was pleasantly surprised by the modern cut of the Yonge Street. Generally, I'd say that Derbies aren't formal enough for an interview, but clearly these "banker shoes" are an exception. You could definitely get away with it-- especially if you have that slimmer/athletic GQ aesthetic. Pick up the Parks/5ths in a different color once you get the offer. ;)
Short answer: They're fine.
Long answer: Derbies are considered a step down in formality vs oxfords because they have open lacing.
That's why the park/5th ave oxfords are considered the ideal business/interview shoe. But the Yonge St is about as dressy as any derby you'll find. Even if someone notices the difference (few will), you'll still get an A for effort. As mentioned above, as long as they're black or dark brown, there's no need to buy a new pair just for interviews.
You'll be perfectly fine in those shoes. Good luck!
