Question: What level do you need to be to wear a REALLY nice suit?
Hi WSO, Saks Off Fifth has BOGO right now, a friends buying a suit, and an Armani, Canali or Brioni suit would come out to like $700-850. Should I buy one? I feel as if it is looked down upon to have such a nice suit at such a low level. They aren't flashy or anything, solid grey or dark navy but still. I need a nice suit, but I am not sure if this is too nice even though it is worth it for the price. I am a first year at a university btw.
I wouldn't stress over whether its too nice but I would be careful to make sure it follows the rules for "interview suits" as that will be your near-term need. Usually sale suits won't and I'd hate to see you waste money.
I would probably buy a solid dark navy or solid charcoal grey suit from one of those designers, but regardless, I am not sure if I would want to wear it to an interview as it might give off a bad vibe about my spending habits even thought that isnt really the case as I am wearing it only because it was BOGO lol.
Unless you show the inside pocket, no one will know it's a Brioni suit. They'll see it's nice fabric but that could also be from an anonymous tailor. If you're happy to drop $800 on a suit then go for it but I think you get the best price:quality ratio with Boggi - $350-500 for a great suit.
If you're happy to spend that money for a suit at uni then go for it but it all comes down to personal preference - in 1st year I wouldn't have spent that much on a suit but would have preferred to save up for a 2nd hand Rolex or Omega that could last me 20 years.
Also, if you buy it be cautious where you wear it as a uni student. If you turn up to a networking event, get tipsy and spill red wine on an $800 Brioni or Canali suit you'll want to jump off a bridge
Thanks so much for the help! I agree that $350-500 is the right range as the other suit that I have is cheaper than that (paid 239 for a decent RL navy suit). And yea, spilling something on this would be awful so I most likely intend to wear this to nicer occasions or to conferences/things like that that I might attend.
Don’t go wasting 800 on a suit. Go to Macy’s and buy a tommy for 300.
Have one made. Off the rack suits, regardless of brand, virtually never fit properly. If you're in NYC I recommend Enzo - they are technically made to measure (not bespoke) but they measure every aspect and the final product looks like you paid 3k for an 800 dollar suit.
I was at Saks Off 5th a while back and almost bought a Versace Collection suit for $700 only to find the same suit for $150 on eBay (new). You don't have to spend a lot of money to get a good suit. Buy something that is high quality and fits in the shoulders, but budget enough money to have it tailored for a good fit.
*Versace Collection is not main line but I was a senior at the time. Main line (premium quality) brands will cost more. A lot of the stuff I saw at Saks Off 5th was the sort of discount line offerings. Nothing wrong with that, still a great buy but just an FYI**
Yea, I noticed that too. The less known brands like Barbera, Cornelliani, and even Canali tend to have the main line suits at Saks off Fifth for a discounted price but usually in a weird design. Thanks for the input!
