Looking at watches, curious to see where everyone else started. I know there are plenty of posts on entry level watch recommendations but I’m more interested in what people actually bought and their thoughts on that.

Career Resources
Here's a cool trick for buying things like watches...
Find 10 - 15 pieces that are well built you wouldn't mind owning.
Go on a forum like WatchuSeek or eBay/etc...
Start putting bids in on the lower end of the range.
You can usually own something like $10k Panerai for a fraction of the cost it would be new and resell at a profit when you get bored. It's fun hunting for rare pieces too that aren't available new anymore.
And as far as lower end brands go...maybe Junghans. I like their stuff a lot, has a cool look to it and well built.
Chrono24 has some fantastic pieces available as well

Can someone explain the appeal of these? Sure they look rugged, but imo they just seem dorky and oversized
From my personal experience, in poorer regions of places like Central America or Southeast Asia, wearing a shiny metal Rolex or Grand Seiko or whatever will get a lot more looks from people you don't want walking behind you at night. Plus, I've never once questioned the durability of my g-shock when diving or something.
Ordered a Tudor Pelagos, LHD model - Tudor is a great "entry" brand if you're looking to get into your first real piece but don't want to spend in the $10s+ right away. Look at the Pelagos, Black Bay and Chrono for 3 different styles with in-house movements.
Baume et Mercier Clifton, steel band black dial. I'm wearing it right now. Fantastic piece.

Casio FW-91 is my first watch. First Luxury watches are Omega Deville Prestige and Vintage IWC Caliber 83.

First true watch was a Seiko SKX007. That gave me the watch bug and led to a Speedmaster, which I flipped for a Seamaster.
Seiko SKX007 was also my gateway watch. Great watch!
Nearly identical for me also. Went from the SKX007, then to a Seamaster Aqua Terra and then to a Speedy.
The SKX is the ultimate entry watch. For ~$200 its nearly impossible to beat.

FC's are great, in college I got a basic white face with small second dial at the 6 o'clock. I put a nice leather strap on it and wear it with a suit all the time, I've had people with Omegas, Panerais etc. complement it. For a ~$200 quartz watch I wouldn't recommend anything else. Next up for me is the Hamilton Intra-Matic Auto Chrono >:)
Brietling Super Avenger was my first nice watch I bought when I closed a big deal. I wore it for two years but it felt too big and bulky so I traded it in for only 200 dollars less than what I bought it for. Used the proceeds and more to buy a Panerai 372. That’s what I wear today. Maybe one day I’ll trade in and buy an IWC Big Pilot
First nice watch was a limited edition sea master. Got it on jomashop for like 3500 versus 6500 in store. Can’t go wrong with an omega (just ask James Bond)
First watch I bought: Timex Weekender - first internship I had, boss made a comment about how I was the only one in the office without a watch
First nice watch: Seamaster 300M Diver - gift from the fam.
Watch I want to buy next: Submariner or GMT Master II from the 90s
First watch I bought was a Tag Heuer Aquaracer Calibre 16, and I still wear it on a leather strap. Regardless of some people's opinions on Tags, I believe it is a beautiful tool watch that is quite versatile. Will never sell it.
...ok WSOhardos, first watch was a Timex chronograph with a blue face and leather strap that I still have 6 years later, replaced the leather strap with the NATO fabric ones. I also have a shinola which I really like
I had a couple victorinox watches in college - one as a gift and bought one after an internship. Would recommend in the MM buyside culture in Texas saves me a shitload of money.

Tag Heuer Aquaracer - stainless band, black face, Got it for ~$650 on Ebay a few years ago. I had wanted it for a while so finding a lightly used one made it possible to buy with my internship cash at the time.
Omega Speedy lightly used from mid-2000s
Tissot T-Tempo. Entry level swiss fully automatic watch. Similar look to a TAG carrera calibre 5, which I also really like.
Next watch will be a Rolex Turn-o-Graph. But right now I wear my apple watch every day and don't see that changing anytime soon.
I got a Speedy from the year I was born (1995) as 21st birthday gift. Yellowish hands and indexes give a vintage feel to it which I personally love!
Seiko Sarb033 - changed for a leather strap is beautiful and still probably my favourite piece

Genuinely surprised that no one on here makes any mention of them at all. They are fantastic watches.
Fashion brands (Fossil for a while) which led me to Seiko Sarb033 and an SKX, then Hamilton field Khaki day date (PVD version), Seamaster 300M diver, now on the AD list for the GMT Master II. I have 100000 times less stress buying watches and feeling bad. At least they don't depreciate like cars. Would like to end up with a Speedmaster Pro, a birth year 1985 5513 Sub and then a gold or two tone of some kind when I am older
IWC Pilot 36 mm, have had the watch for 2 years now and still love it. Also recently saw Putin sporting it, made me chuckle.
The small pilots are real nice. I have some old IWC from the 40s. Great brand
Putin is a huge IWC guy. There are several pictures of him with various iterations within the brand.

First serious watch a Casio my grandfather gave me. First big boy watch I bought with my money a Tudor Black bay.
My first watch paired with my polar HR monitor. I've since updated to a Garmin Fenix 5X. It's great when you want to explain to everyone how active you are.
First watch that I've purchased was an automatic Orient watch ($200) with black leather straps. Not going to bothered upgrading my watch since it's automatic and I don't find automatic watch winders appealing. If my watch ever breaks, probably going to find an automatic watch with leather strap + buckle to prevent crease/wear, with a skeleton and perpetual calendar.
