Pension Fund Investment Analyst
I have an interview with a large state pension fund for an investment analyst role coming up. The team is pretty small, especially for the AUM of the fund, and I would be gaining exposure to a few different asset classes including equities, fixed income, PE, and hedge funds. I would also interact directly with fund managers on behalf of the pension as an analyst. From what I understand they mostly focus on manager selection and broad asset allocation/portfolio construction.
I'm wondering what the career progression would be after starting in a role like this. I go to a non-target state school in the Midwest and I am currently a CFA Level I Candidate. If I get the charter, what kind of opportunities would be available for someone starting in a role like this?
Hi econ2, hope I can help. Do any of these links cover what you're looking for:
Fingers crossed that one of those helps you.
Yes, I read through almost all of those before posting but I noticed they mostly covered PE without much consideration of other asset classes. I was wondering kind of exit ops exist after gaining exposure to a variety of asset classes at a large pension fund, particularly with equities and fixed income.

Agreed, but you should look up Charlie O'Donnell (VC).
Okay thanks for clarifying that for me. I'm not all that interested in ending up in PE or at a hedge fund, and I would like to stay within investment management so it sounds like it could be a good fit for me. Within institutional investment management, would it be difficult to move outside of pension funds specifically? Or is it common to move to different types of institutions? Similarly I'm wondering how common it is to move over to the private sector after starting with a public fund.
