WSO Mobile App is HERE (iOS and Android)

AUGUST 2019 UPDATE: WSO Mobile App now live

Apple iOS

Google Play store (Android)

Version 1 includes just the very basics:
1. browsing forums / latest content
2. starting new discussions
3. commenting
4. Ability to subscribe/ get notifications to forums or certain discussions

...and that's about it

Version 2 will include:
1. search
2. more access to edit your profile and notification controls

This was a lot of work to get the app to play nice with the site, so I hope you all like it.

We welcome any and all feedback! This is the only annoucement we're making for now since I don't want a flood of users until we are able to release more iterations that I'm sure will be needed once you guys & gals point out all of the issues to us in short order :-)

Original post below ------------------------------
As I'm doing research into getting this done for iOS and Android, I have two questions for the community:

  1. Outside of the general functionality of what you see on the mobile site, what else would you like to see on the mobile apps?

  2. Do you or anyone you know have any recommendations of contacts I should speak with. If so, please PM me with suggestions. Ideally, we partner with someone or a company that has developed mobile apps for online communities before so a lot of the functionality will be out of the box.

Thanks,
Patrick

iOS coming any day now!

WSO you may get more interest posting this to Off Topic instead of the IB forum and/or pinning to the front page.

  1. Really just have to hit ground balls here. It should be easy to find topics, navigate to different forums, reply, give SB/MS.

Thinking outside the box, you could integrate the city-specific meet-up communities to be outside of Whatsapp and on their own forum/sub-forum. You could also have a "Class of [Year]" or job/titled community so that e.g. prospective Analysts of a certain year could discuss recruiting timelines and stay connected. You could also have a Certified-only community. Just spitballing from time spent on other forums. Depends on what behaviors you want to encourage or discourage.

Be excellent to each other, and party on, dudes.

A mobile app is a great idea! I think that the app should focus on ease of posting, commenting and voting(similar to Reddit). If we made it easier to communicate quickly, I think we can get more participation from users. Also, an "Events Near Me" tab that filters events based on my current location would be sweet. Finally, similar to what another user commented, we should have a "groups" function, so different analyst classes or anything/anyone can organize and communicate easier. Thanks for taking the initiative, any WSO app would be awesome!

The app would ideally have a less cluttered UI. The mobile website has ads and all those links on the bottom (services and courses, community, contact and legal) which aren't necessary for just browsing the forum. Perhaps make the app like $5 so there's no ads (as in site/course ads) and all those links at the bottom. Basically just make it forum-centric. Another thing would be to make it easier to go back and browse different forums. Right now you can only go back by clicking the top directory (home icon / forums / investment banking forum), but in the app you could just swipe to the left and click which forum you want, without having to load an additional page in between. That way it'd be more intuitive. Thanks for listening.

Ideally it would take after some of the better and more popular reddit apps (Apollo is a great example) , with easy navigation to the main boards and a comment display system that makes it easy to understand which comments are replies and their relative level (Apollo does a good job with this with colors that coordinate to comment level, and allows easy collapsing of comment hierarchys to make reading easier).

I would start small - focus on thread-reading and comment making. Make it easy to vote up and down and set up notifications if you want them. You are looking for a reddit-style relationship with your users first and foremost. Don't waste time and money on a geo location feature that no one will use. I would also minimize permissions, your target audience is going to be very sensitive to access to the potentially non-public information on their phone. Even if you can't access it, perception could kill you.

Also, make it so it can be used - as the site can- without being logged in. Don't create friction to content consumption.

Finally, quick access to the top threads would be great as well.

Hey guys...just an update here. App developers are hard at work and we are getting closer to being able to release a beta version of the WSO app. I'm hopeful by end of this month, but there is still a lot of testing to be done to make sure user authentication/commenting/voting, etc and that the API (hooks into live site) is working properly.

Stay tuned! Patrick

Do you plan to use TestFlight for the beta on iOS? If so, is there a way to sign up for access? I’d be interested in trying it if there’s a way to. Thanks for all the work going into it.

Googling “App for WSO” brought me here.

Something that would be amazing to see in an app for this environment would be a cool “instant” response like feature for AMA’s. I’ve been seeing a couple of AMA’s on Instagram and Instagram’s Questions feature is extremely efficient for AMA’s.

Food for thought!

Plz make it auto update , on mac i have to manually refresh the page to see if there are any updates to my post , comments or getting monkey shit thrown at me.

Also please provide push notifications, i would love to look at my lock screen and see if my post was replied to.

All the other things mentioned above would be great as well :)

looking forward to the app

I've been looking at developing an app and I really admire the speed and features you have. I know it isn't easy. The banana loading icon is an especially nice touch.

I give the app an 8/10 easily. I would probably use it daily if I didn't have firefox.

Random thoughts;

  • Dark mode would be nice to have.

  • When viewing a single thread the top toolbar with the arrow seems unnecessary. Apple and Android have a back key or gesture already. Can probably improve load speed by getting rid.

  • Why not turn the wso logo on the top banner into a button to let us navigate to the default page just like the main site? Gets rid of the home icon on the bottom banner for space.

  • I think you might want to put in a DPI slider to accommodate different viewing preferences because I imagine people will drive you nuts with complaints once more people start using it.

  • In the topic list view there is a large amount of screen real estate used on all of the toolbars; there is one up top for the menu and header, one below that for thread sorting, and one at the very bottom for posting and navigation. The login prompt is also large. Almost 25% of the screen is from these items but some of their buttons have the same functions. I have a weird aversion to static ui elements remaining on screen so I run my phone in "immersive mode". I can only imagine how much additional real estate is being lost for users with a navigation bar and status bar on their screen at all times too.

  • Nested comment replies are a bit confusing to navigate because unlike on desktop the left-hand indicator running alongside each nested comment is difficult to see. On the main site each nested comment already has individual background cards and you successfully improved on this in the app by giving all nested comments one background card with their parent comment. It could be even better though. You could try giving those lines bright alternating colors instead of the grey they have now. Actually, the main site could benefit from that too because when one comment has multiple nested comments it gets cluttered fast.

(Side note: I still miss the old WSO site layout that had linear comment replies in chronological order.)

  • On Android the hamburger menu lags sometimes. I don't know if it is a problem with the area of the button or what. I usually have to tap it twice for it to load. I think the tap is registered because I can hear the sound effect.

  • Some threads won't load and I can't figure out why. For instance; "Goldman Sachs Salt Lake City IBD is being dissolved" won't load at all. I thought it was because of the number of comments but larger threads open fine. I'll update if I figure it out.

  • Scrolling to the bottom of the trending tab triggers a 404 error randomly.

  • Switching between topics is seamless on my device. Almost faster than desktop. I like it. Scrolling speed is killer in large threads though. Maybe add a default comment display number?

Keep it up guys!
